Ah Ha! I had the feeling, a tickle in the back of my mind that there was talk of sporterizing going on someplace! Red Stain! As in restaining stocks? Oh, no, no, no, the headless horseman visits people who do that !

Any more staining talk, and the thread won't be the only thing off this board.

It is gone. I deleted it. It won't show up anywhere unless you are an Administrator, and then it shows up in the trash.

Forum rules: (here are a few lines that apply)

We do not advocate or encourage altering any military surplus firearms.

"Reversible" changes that are made are considered OK as long as they are 100% reversible and no altering of the firearm has been made.

Drilling and tapping, refinishing of metal parts, or refinishing stocks are not considered preservation and discussing how to do this is not acceptable discussion on these forums.

Do not post altered military surplus firearms on the forums.

If you are thinking of altering a military surplus rifle, we don't want to hear about it here. It may be your rifle to do as you wish to it, but this is our house and we don't want them posted here.

Save that red stain for a coffee table, or a bookshelf, but not on a curio and relic military surplus rifle.

well the brass stackers mount isn't meant to be a permanent alteration, the way it's designed is... 1.) knock out the pins holding the rear sight on 2.)install mount onto the rear sight and if you ever want to go back to stock then just pop of the mount and put the pins back in... as far as refinishing the stock, I only did so because it was kind of banged up! similar to, if you had a nice 62' corvette and it had some dents and scratches in it you would want it to look nice right?

No not if it was a running car in original condition. I have an unrestored 1971 MGB, it has a lot of "patina", I wouldn't want it any other way. It also gets more attention at shows than the nicely restored example, it has even won peoples choice trophies because it is in original, used condition.

Jordy the things people collect, whether it be old cars, old rifles, coins, furniture and most anything is because it's something from the past. Something not made anymore. The appearance and condition of these items is part of the mystique and draw for most collectors. The closer to original, the closer you are to holding history as it was meant to be, not someone else's version of it after it's been refinished/modified. That's the difference. Otherwise what's the point. You'll find as you gain experience in the collector world that altered pieces are worth less in people's eyes. I don't mean just monetarily but historically.

Jordy there are both sides to the argument, whether it be cars or milsurps. The difference is the type of forum this is. This is a preservation forum, so that is where the line is drawn. Even if you do customize your rifle, and that is what refinishing is, we don't like it so we choose not to discuss it. We don't mean any disrespect either. That is just the way it is. As for the 57 Chevy 2 door Bel Air, or the 63 Split Window Corvette, or the 65 Ford Galaxy sleeper with the quad 4 barrel 427. There are forums for these cars. Some are custom and hot rod forums. Some are original stock forums. Some may be rat rod forums. Whatever they are when you join them you would read their rules and respect their house. That's what this is about. That's all.
