This has been a good weekend, the M28 was the second score. Yesterday I stopped in at the lgs I do business with and before I left I rummaged through the "bargain bin" as I always do. This time I may have pulled out a diamond or at least something worth more than the $25 marked on it. An SVT-40 scope mount marked as a "Chinese mount?" I have an aftermarket one that Numrich sold so I knew this one was different. This one has nice bluing, smooth edges and markings. Apparently it was owned buy the same collector that his family has been bringing in guns and things to consign at the store after he died. A few months ago I bought a MAS-49 two 91/59s and a South American Banner Mauser from his stuff and a bunch of mags and things including two SVT-40 mags. This store usually doesn't have much in this kind of stuff, mostly new stuff so they don't know or care much about it. Which is good for me. The guy said it must be Chinese because it has a star on it. I spent most of last night and a lot of today researching this thing and I still don't know what to think. Real, or a good fake. It has a different feel about it and it fits on my SVT like butter. The Numrich one is so tight I have never been able to get it on all the way. A friend of mine has wanted it ever sense I got it so I'm letting him buy the aftermarket one. Either way I am happy with it and it looks great on my gun.

Nice find, now you will have to buy a $1000 SVT that is cut for the scope mount
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I tell you what they say all the ones in this country are bogus, but either for $25 you got the very best copy I have ever seen or that is the real thing. If ever you want to trade some stuff for that I am open to your thoughts as I have the sniper already with a repro mount and the right scope so that mount is all I need. It is already on a Tula so I am betting that would really look nice on my rifle. My repro fits perfectly and even shoots and holds POA very well.
I have seen bogus ones all too many times and that ones markings are all too good in my estimation to be anything but the real thing. Get some pics over to Vic Thomas on Gun Boards and see what he says, but it sure looks real to me. Warning I predict he will offer you high amounts of money for it!! Congrats on an absolutely great find. By the way buy a lottery ticket please! Bill
Why are there so few of these around? There are plenty of SVT scopes so you would think there should be enough of these to keep the prices reasonable. The finish is so smooth and the bluing is shinny it just looks new to me. But I have never seen a "real" one in person to compare it to. The problem with these is there is not enough historical evidence to compare to. Thats what I have been reading at least. So I would never consider any of them to be 100% guaranteed real and would never pay those prices. The aftermarket ones are going for over $200 in some cases on Ebay now, just nuts. Is anyone still making them? BTW, I didn't educate the guys at the gun shop. Its there job to know what they have to sell and my job to jump on it. I will post about it on Gunboards and see what Vic says.
