Yeah, I got no problems jumping out of planes... Big snakes and spiders on the other hand... nah... If they're too big to stomp then f-it... I'm gone.Rongo wrote: The dilemma is to either hang out with the snake, or jump from the plane. Both sound equally appealing to me.

Re: Never going to Florida, ever!!
Don't move to Louisiana then. There's a bunch of them here. I hadn't posted about this one out of respect to Chuck but since he started the thread about "snakes" here goes. This is the most recent unwanted visitor to my place. I found him in one of the chicken coups as I was locking them up for the night. I find black snakes in them all the time trying to eat chicks or eggs but this one was the first I've found in a coup. It's a 54" Cane Rattler, a bigger cousin to the Timber Rattler. He had 13 rattles. The scary part is I was just in there about an hour before collecting eggs....in shorts wearing only flipflops. Yikes. Two nights later the cat came in favoring his left front leg and I knew he'd been bitten but one. He was sick that night and it was touch and go but the next day he was jumping on my bed. The only problem was his leg was swelled up to about twice it's size. The next day the swelling was down and he's fine now. It must have only been a warning bite where the snake didn't inject him or it would have been a lot worse. About 80% of bites are just that warning bites because venomous snakes don't use it for defense. It's a hunting tool but most times there's residual venom which is what I think happened here. He's been a 100% inside cat until recently when it started getting cold at night again.bws wrote:Yeah, I got no problems jumping out of planes... Big snakes and spiders on the other hand... nah... My nightmares tend to involve mushroom clouds and empty guns, not snakes. That rattler is a bad mother......well, you know
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

If trhat picture is real.........Holy Shit.........
If its real, and, even with the angle of the shot, that makes it look longer (to me), that still is a rather large lizard

That is a good snake Mike, a dead and bloody one. Why do people insist on playing with things that can eat them? I forgot, In 1968 I was with a group that went to the backside of San Miguel Island, 20 miles out to sea from Catalina Island, to dive with and ride sharks. I was young and dumb then.

The only good snake is one missing a head. And the head on Mike's snake is still too close and still biting.

I don't know Chuck. I've had enough experience around animals to know not to screw with certain ones. As docile as deer look they can kill you dead. Nature should be respected but I guess when we're young we're invincible. I've had my moments that's for sure.Longcolt44 wrote:That is a good snake Mike, a dead and bloody one. Re: Never going to Florida, ever!!
I agree and believe it or not that snake's head was hanging by only a thread of skin and it was still moving. They don't need the head to be attached to still react and move. I've had them curl around my arm with no head. When I saw him in the back of the coup I went to get a garden hoe and put knee high mud boots on, opened the door to give me a fast retreat if needed and gave it one precise whack behind the head. All snakes get killed around here besides Speckled King snakes and the foot long versions like green ribbon and garters. Speckled King snakes eat other snakes and I never find them trying to eat my chicks or eggs. About a week after I killed that one I found a 3+ foot long Cottonmouth under the bass boat at the pond on the back 40. I heard it slither under the aluminium and the dog had just walked past where it was. I had to remove a sapling tree the beavers had chewed through and fallen across the boat to move it so I could shoot it. One straight through the top of the head.BuckeyeSgt wrote:The only good snake is one missing a head. And the head on Mike's snake is still too close and still biting.

Holy Cow
...I would be so gone if I ever saw anything like that. I really don't like creepy crawlers and that beast qualifies as one. Fortunately where we live in Montana snakes and insects are not serious problems. Yikes...that just scares the crap out of me.

Exactly; it's very, very sad. My guess is this will doom the restoration efforts for the Florida Panther too.Artemus wrote:These things are really hard to catch in the wild, they've about wiped out the raccoons and other lower mammals, and are into the deer population. Released by stupid people to a great environment with nothing that preys on them.

This reminds me of the other day, It looked like a 6-7 Ft python was slithering across my street, Ran the bastard over with my truck but it still managed to slither away into the woods.
Was gonna come back and shoot it but it was gone by then.

Where I used to live in southern Illinois we had these big black snakes that would lay on the gravel road at night. We would it the brakes and try to slide out tires over them, it was the only way to actually hurt them.Doggystrike wrote:This reminds me of the other day, It looked like a 6-7 Ft python was slithering across my street, Ran the bastard over with my truck but it still managed to slither away into the woods. Was gonna come back and shoot it but it was gone by then.

Big black snakes on the road at night....I'm gonna have nightmares for sure tonight. Thanks guys
Oh well, storm is coming our way tonight, time to batten down the hatches and throw on another log---I'll be up all night thinking I 'hear' a snake slithering around. You can hear snakes right?
