Thanks again for the replies. They're greatly appreciated.
After thinking this through all day, it seems as though after all of the "junk fees" involved with buying online (i.e., shipping costs, transfer, etc.) on, say, a $100 example, I'd probably be within roughly $40-50 of the price of the one that I have already seen in person. At this point, for me, the question is what price should I put on already knowing the quality of the example I've already seen, and having the ability to thoroughly examine it versus buying one sight unseen.....not to mention, being able to take it home that day. (Yes, I'm a bit antsy
)
Ultimately, these are questions I'll have to answer for myself, but I do know that I'm in a much better position to make a decision now thanks to you guys.

Sounds like it already paid for itself!mogunner wrote:I've only bought two C&R firearms since getting me 03FFl... dang, I'm just wasting this thing, aint I???

mberoose...as you said, you will have to decide that. When I first joined up, the guys kept saying "buy the one that speaks to you". It sounds like this particualr rifle is speaking pretty loudly to you. You'll figure out a price that you're happy with. At the end of the day, that's all that matters!
But, you have to promise to post photos once you bring it home
Good luck!!

You only paid $30 for your C&R & it's good for 3 years. If you buy one gun & SAVE back your investment your in the Black. Money well spent if you ask me.mogunner wrote:I've only bought two C&R firearms since getting me 03FFl... dang, I'm just wasting this thing, aint I???

Re: Hello from a newbie...Hex Mosin price questions within.
I recently paid $130 for a round receiver with a laminate stock from J&G. It was $100 plus $30 for a bore select. It has a shiny bore with a good crown. If I had to pay for transfer it would add an extra $30 plus $15 for shipping for a total of $175. I have my C&R so I paid $145.
However my first C&R purchase was a 34 tula, no select for $79. It also has a great bore. There is some luck involved. SOG, AIM and J&G will tell you what kind of bores you can get if you email them.

I think what I'm going to do is pick up the one I mentioned in the original post. Cabelas is a real hike from where I live, but within the next few weeks me & a couple friends are planning to go up there, and I'll probably pick up another one.

Whatever you do don't get upset if you find a 'better' deal later. If you keep looking for the 'best' deal, you will NEVER end up with one. During the couse of your collecting you will end up balancing out the good deals with the ones that could have been better.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

That was probably the first thing I had to come to grips with, considering the typical price range that they go for. But knowing this first one certainly won't be my last, the way I see it - months, or even years down the road, I won't remember what I lost on this one (a couple bucks maybe?), only what I gained, and that's what counts.Ironnewt wrote:Whatever you do don't get upset if you find a 'better' deal later. One thing I can tell you after decades at this, everything will come around again, every deal I ever walked away from I later found one like it or better. Most of the time I found whatever it was over and over again. You did OK with this one because if you keep it ten years the value will surpass what you paid and you will have it all that time to play with.

My 1942 Izhevsk is that way but shoots 1/2 minute of Nazi all day long. I mean these things are your basic war production killing machines. The exterior finish is rough enough that I could sand the stock with it, but where it has to be proper tolerances it is.Junk Yard Dog wrote:You never know what you are going to get, I have a series of ex dragoon refurbs from 1921-1928 that have bores that look new. Then again I have a 1943 that is entirely shot out, there is something to be said to having the rifle in hand to inspect before buying.

Re: Hello from a newbie...Hex Mosin price questions within.
When collecting the '42-'44 dates I was going out of my way to find the roughest finished receivers I could. They graphically demonstrate the seriousness of the situation the USSR was in during that time. After the tide turned in late 1943 the appearance of the rifles took a dramatic turn for the better, some of my 1943's look as well finished as a post war model.

Re: Hello from a newbie...Hex Mosin price questions within.
The only 2 collectable military rifles I had for a long time were a Polish M44 and a VZ24 Mauser. I bought them 12 years ago and really didn't give the cost a thought. They seemed cheap enough at the time. The M44 being $89 and the Mauser at $99 seemed fair. They're nothing to write home about but 12 years later try to find either for sale. The Russian M44s are $200+ now and I really haven't priced the Mauser but I figure it's worth twice what I paid.Junk Yard Dog wrote:One thing I can tell you after decades at this, everything will come around again, every deal I ever walked away from I later found one like it or better. Veddy veddy interesting....
So I'm on a local gun forum, and there's a guy in town with the following he's willing to part with:
Mosin Carbine
90-100 rounds
Stripper clips
Sling & butt pad
Asking $275.
I've read through the Mosin ID 101 pages about the carbines, and I realize they are some of the more rare models. Thoughts/pointers/tips?

Re: Hello from a newbie...Hex Mosin price questions within.
The price seems a little high, $50 to $75.00, but some additional info is needed. Is it an M44 or M38, which arsonal, condition and date of manufacture. The ammo is a nice kicker but is only worth about 25 bucks retail.

Re: Hello from a newbie...Hex Mosin price questions within.
Just asked him for that information.
Ironically, the same shop that had the hex receiver I was looking at last weekend also has an armory decommissioned sniper model 91/30, matching numbers (wood patch over scope cut-out, plugged screw holes on the bolt...on Guns America).....and it turns out the owner of the gun is on this same local gun forum. He offered it for $175.
Jeez, I'm really shopping heavy here. I appreciate your patience with me more than anything.

Prices around here for intact M44's are 239. And I haven't seen any of these online gun stores doing their two rifle deal either, in spite of what seems like everybody having a new shipment of laminate 91/30's now. Take that for what it's worth as comparison.
You see in this world there are two kinds of people my friend, those with loaded guns... and those who dig. You dig.
