An Arisaka Type 99 is calling my name

Post by Rocket »

Local shop has it for $200. However, it's been "restored" meaning the stock has been refinished and the barrel re-blued. I don't have any Japanese guns, and I know it's not original, but man, it's a beauty. I need to resist...

I know, I know, you are shocked no one said BUY BUY. If I had others I would be more tempted by the bubba but not the first one.

Did the shop tell you the rifle was "restored" or does it just look too nice? The $200.00 dollar question, what does the mum look like, numbers, late war, early war, Type 99, 38, anything else you can tell us about this rifle?

They just said they bought a bunch from a local guy who liked to restore them. It looks spiffy for sure. I have a couple of pics on my dumb phone but I can't get them off. Don't have the right cable. It's ok though, I'm settled down about it now.

Here is what can happen to bubba in refinishing a fine Arisaka. The Red finish on some of the Toyo Kogyo (and others) rifles was made from some plant that is a relative of the Sumac plant family. People who have sanded these rifles have often reported breaking out with poison ivy like rashes. Take that bubba.

What LC is referring too was urushi lacquer made from the sap of the urushi tree, this stuff is toxic. The craftsman who work with it develop an immunity over many years though it takes a long time, stuff has been in use 1000 years. The Japs used it as it was very water resistant this gave Jap rifles a shine that most military rifles do not have, today sometimes people mistake an original urushi lacquer coat as a Bubba refinish. The red wood Toyo Kyogo rifles actually have urushi wood stocks.

Hey Rocket, do you have any more specifics on this rifle? Or pictures? I know you said it was calling your name.

Just some pics on my phone that are terrible and I can't retrieve. I might go take a look at it next week and get some better shots.

Well we can definitely close the if it is refinished book...IT IS refinished. Too bad. Type 99, refinished stock, missing aircraft wings on rear sight, mono pod and dustcover, but the monopod and dustcover are rarely there anyway. Stock looks horrible in that condition. :D

I'm not sure how we ever got to the "if it was" discussion. I knew it was. I just didn't know how far off this rifle was as a whole.

Not too bad after the stock. It has the normal problems. No aircraft wings on the sights and ground mum. I would say in the 200-250 ranges if the stock was not messed up. The monopod and the dustcover would add money to it if there and also the mum would add money. :D

Besides the stock refinish, you called that one right, it looks like it's been reblued, the color on all the metal is not right. I would pass on that one, you can find an original example and will be much happier with one. :2cents:

I have vet bring back Kokura Arsenal Series 21 S/N 22xxx of 99,999 1939 –1945 w/ Chrysanthemum w/ aircraft wings and my stock finish and metal does NOT resemble the pictures that you have posted. The original owner ditched the monopod and noisy cover somewhere in the South Pacific prior to his joining his ancestors :o 8-) 8-)
