Snow camo stock

Post by cj1964 »

A fellow collector was cleaning out his basement and getting rid of some accumulated odds and ends that had been collecting dust. I brought this home and I'm not positive what it is, but I believe it's a Finnish snow camo stock. There are archive photos of Finnish ski troops with white painted stocks, but I've never seen one intact... :vconfused:
I have no idea what happened to the rifle and there is no buttplate, but the stock is either a dragoon or early 91/30 (squared nose cap) and it was painted from tip to toe! You can even see where the bands were apparently painted over. The paint has yellowed a bit, especially toward the tip, but I believe that's just aging petina.
He told me he bought this many years ago from someone else who had a bunch of odds and ends he was selling. The CCCP mark is intact and if it's Finnish, it was from a captured rifle. I'd love to get some other opinions about this stock. I consider it a real gem of a find.

I know there was some snow camo and actually was a unit. I think they were ski troops though and had regular finnish rifles of some type, m27 or m28. I never actually found much info but did find the name of the unit but It is long lost in my head at the moment. Maybe Bugelson will know. :D

Nice. There was a gunboards thread on this a while ago. I'll try to dig it up.

Thanks for the gunboards post link. My paint seems to not have the same crazing as shown in that post, but while looking at it with a magnifying glass just now I can clearly see that the stock crest shows "РСФСР"!!! That means it's originally Tula 1921-1923!! That's a good detail to note - sorry I missed it.
Now that you mention it desdem, I seem to recall talk about the ski troopers painting Finnish rifles. Whatever this stock is, it has paint wear near the dog collar areas and I'm quite certain it was carried in service! Maybe I'll post on gunboards to see what feedback/flaming I can generate.

Over the years I've seen several white painted slings, most but not all were M39 type slings that Pat Burns has sold as "parade slings", some of them did look to to be newer but some had a very aged yellowing look similar to your stock.

Interesting - I've never seen one of those myself. Thanks for that info, I'll be on the lookout for one now.

Interesting stock, someone probably swapped it out because they thought it was ugly without realizing at all what they had.

Wow! I have seen pictures of some with some paint still in tact, but never that much. Major cool find! To bad someone took it off the original rifle, but still a very cool piece to find.

RSFSR is an Izhevsk stock marking, not Tula

Yep, looks like the Finnish snow cammo paint to me. Too bad it's not with it's rifle! From what limited examples I've seen, usually the metal of the rifle got painted too.
