Quick modern rifle question...
Re: Quick modern rifle question...
MN, not sure if you found out more about your rifle or not, but Oly Arms is like 20 miles from my house. They are really good guys and very helpful. You did very well on that purchase, by the way. Now you just need to put in a nice Rock River 2-stage trigger. They are pretty cheap, but so worth it!
Anyhow, I got some more info for you, if you need it,
Your "PCR", which stands for "Politically Correct Rifle" was made in 2002, thus the PCR-02 designation. Oly Arms has been making this model for a very long time. It is not the "Plinker", but the receiver is forged. That's no biggy, really, most are. MEGA actually mills theirs, but you pay up the butt for that (Well, I don't cuz I know some guys over there and they too, are only about 20 miles away from me).
You were right about the twist, it's 1:9 (good job). Oly calls out that rifle as a CAR5A3 or M16A3 as you have the Heavy Barrel (HBAR). You will have to have the barrel threaded for a flash hider or get a slip on. I'd have it threaded. Oly charges $65 to thread it and then you can play with some very cool flash hider's.
One thing to keep in mind is that since you have the A3 sights on a removable handle, when you zero it, the range is a little different. You probably don't have marks on your sight or if you do, they might be a little off. That's just due to the removable handle and not being able to run the elevation down as far as normal. When you zero, of course start at 25M (mark your elevation on the sight), then do the same for 100M and 200M and you'll be set forever. The PCR's are actually very accurate and you should be proud that this one is your first AR. I decided to build my own for my first one and yours will probably shoot as well as mine with a match barrel. We'll see! I still have to sight mine in, yet, but I'll shoot pics of the targets. Hopefully tonight if the rain stops. I can do up to 50yrds on my own property, without shooting my neighbors. hehe

Re: Quick modern rifle question...
Looks like a rifle for coyote hunting hand and accurate.
Re: Quick modern rifle question...
Drago, thank you for the information!
I read up quite a bit on the rifle last night and even happier with it now that I know what I got lol. I was surprised to find it was a heavy barrel (Hbar) and some of the other features. One thing I still haven't figured out is why this is a "PCR" rifle, but yet it has a removable handle and non-threaded barrel? I thought those features were all "pre-ban", but I guess that may not have anything to do with "PCR".
The rear sight elevation turret does have numbers...1 through 4 if I remember right. I finally got brave and stripped it down, cleaned it up and got it back together again. It wasn't that hard actually
I am not sure if I could have this barrel threaded since it has a retaining groove near the muzzle. I found the OEM threaded adapter and flash suppressor, but I haven't ordered them yet. I wanted to read up more on having it threaded first...also the guy I got it from sent an email today and he thinks he remembers where he put the original ones. He was going to check tonight and let me know.
I am going to try to shoot it tomorrow night. The little one wants to go over to a friend's house for a bit and the range is open late on Tuesdays. Its only 25 yards, but it will be fun to get a few rounds through it.
On the local forum where I found the rifle, I made a thank you post to the owner. I already got two PMs...one wanting to know what I paid for it, a second offering to buy it for the advertised price ($600).
I think I'll keep it...
Thanks again...that was interesting and very useful information!

You done good MN, I'm sure you will enjoy it. When I bought mine my wife about flipped, "you want to spend what on that? Why do you need that?". I carried one for a long time I said, and I wanted it.

Shoot it for one of those families that lost someone or a wounded one. You can shoot the last one of the day for me.

Deal. First shot out of the rifle goes to Pfc. Edwin Wood, age 18, Omaha, Ne. May he rest in peace and his Family find comfort that he died serving his country.BuckeyeSgt wrote:Shoot it for one of those families that lost someone or a wounded one. You can shoot the last one of the day for me.![]()

At least that attachment has some real potential!
When searching for a replacement flash suppressor, I keep running across one that has a big hypodermic needle looking end. Its a tire deflator. Everyone knows that zombies can't drive

I got goosebumps reading that. You better just unload the whole mag for that boy.MN Fan wrote:Deal. First shot out of the rifle goes to Pfc. Edwin Wood, age 18, Omaha, Ne. Re: Quick modern rifle question...
I will. It's another sad story...like they all are. He called home and his Mom missed the call. He left a message that simply said "I'm doing fine, miss you, love you".
He died before she heard the message.
I'm glad our kids are coming home.

Shit, this government and this country had better not waste the sacrifices these kids are making for all of us. not again.

Re: Quick modern rifle question...
It has nothing to do with pre-ban/post-ban. As far as I know, the PCR is simply a particular model Oly Arms makes. You should really call Oly Arms and ask them about it. You'll spend a lot less time asking them, than looking for answers online, I promise you. You'll get someone on the phone right away, who will immediately be able to answer questions you have about your rifle. They are really good guys over there. They will suggest you send them the rifle in to be threaded and I think that is probably your wisest plan. If they screw it up, they'll replace the barrel, free of charge. If you have a smith do it, it'll be harder to get them to do the same. Your call, but for $65 plus shipping, that's what I'd do.MN Fan wrote:Drago, thank you for the information!

You mentioned thinking you needed wrenches. You will, if you desire to take the stock and the barrel off. I can warn you, that the stock is tricky. They aren't like other rifles that may have a screw or two. There are special little springs and things that can get EASILY lost. (Don't ask how I know, hehe). I hate taking the stock off, so I have an AR buddy of mine work on mine.
I'm going to be sighting my AR in today as the weather looks dry out. Been dying to sight in this new Trijicon scope. I can only do up to 50 yrds at my house, so that will have to do for now.
Re: Quick modern rifle question...
Thanks Drago. I'll take your advice and send the barrel in to be threaded. The adapter looks to be a bit bulky and after all, it's just an adapter
I hope you were able to get your's sighted in. Now that I wolfed down my Jimmy John's, I'm going to head out and get a few rounds through mine too.
My daughter's coming along...after I shoot it a few times, I'll let her give it a go
Thanks again for all the information.

Re: Quick modern rifle question...
I left work early so I would still have daylight. On the way home I slammed into the back of a pickup truck when he suddenly stopped for some old ladies that just walked out in front of him (at the crosswalk though). My little Honda Civic wouldn't stop!
Re: Quick modern rifle question...
Leaking a little antifreeze, I drove straight over to my mechanic's shop, where I still had my pickup sitting there since the new engine was put into the Honda (long story). I came home and sighted my AR in anyway. She cloverleaf's at 50yds.
