M44 Price Check Please
M44 Price Check Please
I'm looking at a M44 carbine at one of my local pawn shops and would like to try to get a realistic value on it. I'm supposed to meet up with the owner of the pawn shop tomorrow morning to get it priced. No one else there even could tell me what the price of it is going to be as they were getting it ready to put on the floor, but it's not been put out yet. I got lucky and stopped in there while one of his guru's was cleaning it up. This is the first carbine I've ever seen around here period.
I was able to look at it. Bore nice and clean with strong lands, bore isn't dark, more on the frosted side, and receiver marked 1945 with a hammer and sickle above the chamber if I remember right. Wood, bluing, and side folding bayonet in good shape too. Overall looked like it was in very good milsurp condition. I don't have a phone or camera with me, so no pictures yet.
I don't know what he is going to hit me at, but I suspect somewhere around $150.00. He also told me he has three more or so older rifles in the back, and most are fixer uppers. He asked me if I'd be interested in them. Of course I said I would have some interest in them. He doesn't know what they are, and I'll probably be posting about them tomorrow when I look at them.
So the million dollar question is what are good shape M44's bringing nowdays, and what's a fair and reasonable price for one?
Thanks,
Ray

For $150 it would be a steal, $175 to $220 OTD wouldn't be too bad either. Those other fixer uppers sound pretty interesting also
Re: M44 Price Check Please
Good day Ray . Assuming it is in it's original refurb condition (i.e. hasnt been refinished or bubba'd in any way ) I would think that up to $225 would be fair for a rifle in good condition. There are still a few retailers out there with them in stock and listed around that dollar amount. Of course when you buy it locally you dont have to fuss with shipping etc. Be certain to post some pics should you get it..

Re: M44 Price Check Please
I've recently purchased two M44s for $220 each. These were in great condition with mirror bores that weren't counter-bored. Hope this helps.
Re: M44 Price Check Please
I agree with the other guys. I think 250 would be tops and around 200 would be better. If it is a tula even a better deal.

Re: M44 Price Check Please
$250 around here is the norm for a Izhevsk.
I would buy at $150 without thinking twice.

$200 to $300 at most Gun Shows...
Re: M44 Price Check Please
I would be all over it at $150. Going for $300 and up locally.

Thanks everyone for the advice!
I've picked up a few nice milsurps from him at very reasonable prices, and I hope he prices it like I think he will. It's one of those places where if he doesn't know what it is he'll ask me when I come in. I'm not an expert at all, but I guess I'm one of the few people who like the older milsurp stuff around my area. Sometimes it amazes me the old milsurps he gets in because you never see them in any of the gun stores in this area. Normally I don't see a lot of milsurps at the gun shows around here either. Except for the same four overpriced $2,000.00 low serial number sporterized 1903 Springfields and Rock Islands one guy drags to every show. I laugh every time I pass his table.
By the way, this pawn shop has a very nice MAS49/56 hanging on the wall for $379.95. It's been on the wall for a good two months. I have zero interest in it as I don't want to search for any more oddball calibers. The 7.7 Jap is expensive enough!
One thing for sure, I'll know tomorrow how it pans out!
Thanks again!

Pretty good deal on the mas. They go for 450-650 or so. There is one here for 750.

Re: M44 Price Check Please
Back in late June I purchased a very nice m44 from Wiener's in Johnson City, TN for $219.00 but the shipping set me back $28.05 for a grand total of $247.95
I have a C&R so I didn't have to pay an FFL01 $20.00 to receive it for me.
Since it was made in '44 it has by far the nicest bore, but my others are 91/30's mid '20-'30 Hexs so they probably saw allot of service.

Yeah, the last couple I have seen were $450.00 and up, so I thought it was a pretty good price too. I'd dare say that MAS can be had for $350.00 out the door.desdem12 wrote:Pretty good deal on the mas. They go for 450-650 or so. There is one here for 750.

Re: M44 Price Check Please
Good luck. Here is a story we all hope turns out well for you.
Re: M44 Price Check Please
Went down and talked to them today. I'm going to pick it up today after work. Like I figured, he had it marked at $149.95, and my price is $130.00 out the door. Not a great deal like martin08's yard sale Luger
, but still a good deal though.
Pictures will be posted this evening after I get home from work. Looks like it's an Izhevsk Century import, and it didn't look like it was counterbored to me. Thanks everyone for the advice!

$130 out the door for an Izhevsk M44? That's a steal these days!
I just paid $200+tax a few months back for one. Maybe a bit high, but all the cosmoline had been removed, and the bluing and bore were really good.
Around here, some are selling trashed Type 53s for $200. I just saw a beat-up M44 with a sewer pipe bore for $350!

I got my Russian M44 (Izhevsk dated 1947) up here in Canada last year for $150 - that being said, there's a dealer called westrifle here selling them for $550 here now...

Average price in the states is about $225, they are not as common as they once were.
