Trout fishing off the beaten path

Post by racerguy00 »

I took my young boy trout fishing in a small, spring fed stream today. I hadn't fished there since I was a teenager and my great grandparents rented the house at the mouth of the creek. The property was posted after they passed, but recently ownership changed so we were able to go back there.

A lot has changed since then, but the one thing that hasn't is a good population of native brook trout in a stream that is ten feet wide at it's widest. In the deeper holes between boulders it is literally two feet wide. As far as I know it hasn't been fished since I was last there. Catch and release for me so the popluation stays viable, with the exception of some nice one that my son begged me to let him bring home for his grandma to fry up for supper. Lots of good memories and some new ones made too.

Some had eyes bigger than their stomachs, smallest one I ever remember catching. :D

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Most people never have really fresh fish.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

 awesome! Was this fly fishing? I enjoy fishing but I am not very knowledgeable on it other than using a bobber in a lake haha. Would love to learn all the other styles. Looks like some good trout right there.

Nope, not fly fishing. We were using standard ultralite tackle, 4 lb test line, very small hooks and minnows. Didnt even have to cast the line because the stream is so small. Just let out about 4 feet of line and plop it into the current where it would drift under rocks and logs.
