Enfield savage rifling question

Post by Gsragtop »

So i picked up my no4 mk1 * savage enfield today from my FFL.. This is the rifle I won on GB while buzzed a few weeks ago for $175 shipped.. Over all I am very happy with it, and it was as described.. Maybe you guys can help me with some of the markings??

What rear site is this, it's different from my other two no4 mk1s, its very cool and I like it a lot..

Where did they import mark these, I don't see any (i don't recall seeing import marks on any of my Enfields to be honest)

My NUMBER ONE question is about the bore and rifeling. The rifeling seems to be reversed from what I have seen on every other rifle I have ever looked at.. In other words in most rifles the thin grove (the lands right??) is raised above the Valley or grove.. On this rifle it seems to be REVERSED, where the lands are actually CUT INTO the valley.. It's shiny, and looks in good shape, but I have never seen this before.. And that includes my other two no4 mk1's. what's your thoughts ??

What's confusing you is the look of the two groove rifleing after having only seen 4 or more groove bores that look much more " full". It's a perfectly normal 2 groove.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Is that what it is?? This is my mosin ex sniper, it just seems the thin lands are raised and on the enfield they are recessed. Are you saying if the enfield had two more groves cut in it would look closer to the mosin??

All rifle barrels start out as a smooth tube before the grooves are cut into it to make it a rifled barrel, your Mosin would look the same inside if all it had was two grooves.

Never seen anything like it, I would think they would be much Lees prone to wearing out? More surface area and all??

Yeah, my 03a3 and M1917 look just like that. Typical two groove rifling.
