Question concerning M44

Post by jdolinski »

Stopped at a gun shop today while traveling, saw a Mosin that was tagged Russian M44 but is different from the usual M44's I see. It had an oil finnish was dated 1955 and had what looks like a eagle on the barrel shank and the Izhevsk mark as well all numbers matched except the bolt, even the stock had the serial number on it. sorry could not get pictures. is this likely a Romanian M44?

Sounds like a Romanian M44, the crest on it has been mistaken for Izhevsk before.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Any opinion on the bolt not matching? everything else does match the receiver, they had it priced at $239 seem fair?

Of course, matching numbers are preferred for collecting. But probably worth at least $200 for a shooter.

Congrads, hope that you're as happy w/ yours as I am w/ mine.

Mine is a '44 with a beautiful bore, but then I'm comparing it to my 91/30's made in the mid '20's & '30's which saw allot more "range time" during WWII :devil2:

I would try and get him down but if he wouldn't and it speaks to you I would buy it. The prices are never going to be what they were in the past.

Mixed parts are normal with these, my Hungarian is a great shooter, it has Hungarian, Romanian, and Polish parts in it, all force matched with an electropencil and none of the original serial numbers even lined out.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Went by again today and took a few pictures, Looks like Romanian M44 with a Hungarian bolt. some rust on the barrel near the front sight. Bore is really dark but looks like good rifling. The stock is a little rough, not T53 rough but pretty dinged and nicked and what looks like may be notched cut int the wrist area? and it is missing the cleaning rod. Got the guy to come down to $210 but I don't know, I couldn't pull the trigger and buy it

Here are a few pictures.

Check the crown with a bullet to see how tight it is. I got a Romanian M44 off GB that was gorgeous on the outside and had what looked to be a dark bore with good rifling. It had rifling all right, but the grooves and lands were so corroded a bullet would drop in 5". Someone at some point had fired a bunch of corrosive ammo and not cleaned it up. Shame.

From what I can see it looks like a fair deal, and that patch of rust just needs some TLC.

The asking price is about what I paid for my Hungarian M44, in similar condition. It's a sweet carbine and I feel I got a fair deal. :)
