New .17 WSM rimfire round
Did anyone catch the article on this in the new American Rifleman? Seems like an interesting cartridge, the next evolution from the .17HMR which is a great rimfire round.
Almost double the energy of the .17HMR, based off a large nail gun case. Kindof interesting. I won't be buying into one until its more widely accepted and more arms manufacturers start supporting it, though the Savage rifle doesn't look bad, and I love my Savage in 17HMR.

Ya I was reading that article and was a little intrigued. The ballistics look pretty damn good. I've been thinking about getting a .17hmr but I might hold off now.

I saw that, but being a contrarian, I gotta ask. What is the major advantage of the .17 WMR over the .22Mag (none I can see), and how does this new one best a .223 or even the old .17 Remington?(Can't reload it) I am puzzled as to the draw.

I saw a chart somewhere and can't find it now. Flatter shooter, bullet has a few more grains and the terminals are better further out. I think the cost will be way cheaper than a .223 Going off memory here....

Reloaded .223 is hard to beat pricewise, and also hard to beat on terminal ballistics. Call me a prick, but I am of a mind, that all of the .17s are a manufacturers gimmick.

Oh I'm not arguing that. I'd take my 556's all day long. But comparing the different rimfires I just thought it totally beat out the .17hmr and .22's. And I don't reload so I wouldn't know cost comparisons there. Just know rimfire vs. .223 store bought is cheaper. Probably on the same page but just looking at different angles.millman wrote:Reloaded .223 is hard to beat pricewise, and also hard to beat on terminal ballistics. Re: New .17 WSM rimfire round
Just ordered a .17 HMR Lux barrel for my CZ 455 FS 22lr and FedEx delivers it on Thursday 15-Aug.
Happy that CZ allowed 15% off and free shipping
I love their products, Can't pronounce their name or the town they are located in, but making Mausers since '36.
Great European "Craftsmanship" and a fine product.
When they do offer a .17 WSM I will consider ordering another barrel.
Until then I'll just put some quality time in w/ the 2 calibers that I've got.

Re: New .17 WSM rimfire round
I have the "Blue Press" and enough brass, primers, bullets, and powder to reload @ 1995 prices, but they are 55 gr. FMJ so I've got to get some hollow point for larger critters, like pigs, which unfortunately have invaded the country along with other things. Coyotes being the worst for deer and turkey populations.BuckeyeSgt wrote:Oh I'm not arguing that. I'd take my 556's all day long. I do not see this caliber taking off. With so much other calibers to use, why waste your money on a rimfire? Get a centerfire if you want ballistics of the 17 WSM. I have a 17 HMR and love it but if I wanted something faster and harder hitting, I would to with a centerfire. At least with a centerfire you can reload them.

I love it when in the midst of an ammo shortage somebody introduces a new caliber along with a firearm that is not even available as yet.

Guess I'll take a wait and see approach before launching out, what do they say about buying the first model year?

You kind of stole my thunder, Chuck. I was just thinking, "One more caliber that's harder than hell to find!"Longcolt44 wrote:I love it when in the midst of an ammo shortage somebody introduces a new caliber along with a firearm that is not even available as yet.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you...
Re: New .17 WSM rimfire round
I don't have the .17wsm but I love my little .17hmr.It isn't a fancy rig just a Marlin XT .17hmr with a bull barrel and synthetic stock.I have it topped off with a Vortex Diamondback 4x12-40 scope.Even old guys who wear bifocals can get dime size groups at 50 yards.
Yes sir I love the kee-rack of my little .17

I looked at the ammo at Gander Mountain. It looks pretty darn cool, but I am like sonny, my little ke-rackin 17hmr is just right. I bought the inexpensive Mossberg International 817, with the intentions of buying a better one, but this one shoots great and has a nice trigger, so I just shoot it.
