I forgot to mention; Looking at your pics of it taken down, it is not capable of full auto/selective fire. When he said, "automatic", he surely meant semi-automatic. That is a beautiful piece of history. :D

Very cool :vcool: . Sorry about the Type 53, but the M1A1 is a more than adequate substitute

Thanks! I have my suspicions that it was converted to full auto at one point in time and then converted back. If looking at the stock you can see the cut-out for the selector switch. There are pencil lines at the front and back of the cut-out where it was marked for the alteration. Perhaps it was converted back to semi before coming state side again.

I took it to the range and put about 30 rounds through. I had some problems with the extractor and had maybe 4-5 fails to eject. Not sure if there are any gunsmiths around here that can fix this for me, so it has gone into storage to be brought out and admired from time to time.

It would be nice to have a bring back T53 but an M1A1 that you can trace to your grandfather is really cool.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I would say that this is worth a mint, but actually it's closer to priceless. Wow. That needs to be locked away from thieves good and proper.

You are correct; At one time, it was converted by a local armorer with the kit JYD mentioned. Fortunately, it was re-converted to semi only, it does not have the round bolt body, and cannot be remade to fire selectively. M1 Carbines without the kit and round bolt installed are not considered FA, else many, many of them would be verboten.

As per the FTE's, check in SGN, there is a company that does US issue weapons repair up to depot level, AMG International Armory. Guy Snellen is his name, his email is guyamg@centurytel.net Send him an email, he will be able to fix it. I'd love to do it myself, as a way of repaying your Dad for his service, but I'm not an 01FFL.
