Re: Westinghouse - Mint - Factory Fresh - Never Fired
Russia defaulted on the contract, left Westinghouse and Remington hanging with thousands of rifles nobody wanted. They were in a very tight spot before Uncle Sam bailed them out. Uncle found himself involved suddenly in a major world war and only had enough rifles to are a fraction of the needed troops. Uncle also didn't care about any serial number but the one of the barrel, US rifles only have one serial number, it's always been that way, the numbers matched parts crap is a European thing. The rifles used for US service were given the flaming bomb stamp, the rest that were not used ended up in storage, and later sold by the DCM for a few dollars in the 1920's. Yes, a few dollars would have bought this rifle in 1928, brand new out of the crate. It's possible that some of the rifles produced later on might have not been serial numbered, or maybe this was a presentation rifle of some sort. That would account for it's condition if it spent it's life on display someplace.

Man that is the nicest one I have seen. A decent price too I think.

A very good price when you take into account the rarity of such a rifle in this condition, like finding a MS70 Morgan silver dollar made by the Carson City mint.

Re: Westinghouse - Mint - Factory Fresh - Never Fired
I have been told by several people who should know about it that toward the end of Remington's and Westinghouse contracts when the Russians had defaulted on payments and money was tight. The companies actually tried and did at times pay their workers with rifles. One I tried to buy years ago was in one of these workers family and was being sold after a relatives death to satisfy bills. It was in similar condition and the family was represented at the sale and gave that story. I know we always say buy the rifle and not the story and more than likely that is why I don't own the rifle today. This is a couple of years ago and it went for far over $1000 at that time. I was in with too many high rollers that day and they had no second thoughts of spending what it took to go home with that rifle, me I wanted to eat and stay warm for Winter! What I wonder about is who bought it, and stored it away for the 90 years in such a way that it did not rust. Why they did it, and how.

Agreed, one like this is so rare it should be left alone and never fired. Frankly should be in the NRA museum. I would use gloves to handle it also. Congrats, I am in awe.bunkysdad wrote:I wouldn't even take it apart. Especially with anything less than perfect fitting hollow ground screwdrivers.

Amazing!

Very Very Nice Rifle
I have a friend back in England that has one of the Last Triumph Bonneville's ever made in Meriden ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triumph_Engineering ) And It has never been out of the Box , He opens the side of the Box and cleans It and sprays It with some rust stopper , The Tires are off and kept separate .
Very Strange I think , and I bet he is not the only one , Bike must be worth a fortune now

If you went back to GB and contacted the seller to find out when he acquired it and backtrack from there.
It would take some real detective work, but would really add to the documentation if you were successful.

Good Idea, or call The History Detectives so we can see it on TVJoeinthehills wrote:If you went back to GB and contacted the seller to find out when he acquired it and backtrack from there.

I don't think I can add anything that hasn't already been said. Outstanding doesn't come close to describing this rifle.

Checking this out in more detail, incredible!!!! The polished like new bolt knob, the magazine smooth and evenly blued not to mention those nice bands on the pristine wood with the original finish unblemished. I normally shoot anything I get (unissued bolt action Yugo's exception) that rifle
I don't think I could bring myself to do it, imagine the bore on that one. As far as price, yes $1000.00 for a cornerstone to a collection, one in a million example, yes.

I came back to look on a larger screen too. A coupe of neat things that stand out, the tiny screws factory placed to hold the bands in position, the area of the bolt that normally we see a serial #, and this one has not been scrubbed, or filed to put another number, but most of all look at the perfect little knurled pattern on the cocking knob!
