[noob] How to tighten magazine?

Post by auctoris »

The magazine on one of my Mosins rattles when I shake it. I know, "Then don't shake it." :D

But I only see one screw on it and it's tight. Is there some other way to tighten the magazine or do some Mosins just have a rattle?

Thanks

First of all, Welcome to the forum...There are two screws that hold the magazine/trigger guard in place. One on the bottom , just forward of the magazine , and the other is on top of the rifle at the tang. This is at the rear of the action. If those are tight then you will likely need to do a better job of describing what you are saying is loose.

Load it. That will stop the rattle.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Actually, I just discovered it's the bottom "door" of the magazine that's loose. When I open it, I can jiggle it from side to side. It appears the screws on which it pivots may need to be tightened, but they don't have any notches for a screw driver.

Is there some way to tighten those?

Thanks

Ah, I'll test that out when I take it out to shoot.

No screws, it just has ware or is just a lose fit where the catch grabs the floorplate. As long as it holds the floorplate well when loaded then don't worry about it. Welcome to the club. You said Mosins so lets hear about them and better yet pics! We live on pics here.

The reason it has no screw slot is because it is a rivet. These rifles rattle. They were made that way to stay reliable in bad conditions. Also they are old rifles with alot of wear too.
Let me make a short, open, blanket comment. There are no good guns. There are no bad guns. Any gun in the hands of a bad man is a bad thing. Any gun in the hands of a descent person is no threat to anyone--- except bad people. -- Charleton Heston

Guns are not good, they are not evil. Save those descriptions for the people holding the firearm. -- Unknown

The only reason I thought it may not be normal is that I have two Mosins, a 1939 and 1943. The 39 does not rattle, but the 43 does. I figured it was no big deal, but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks

The cause of all that rattling is the floorplate latch spring & it's tension holding the floorplate shut. Some are looser than others... Not a big deal really. As long as it holds it is just fine & no need to worry. You will notice that each different Mosin you add to the collection has a little nuance or quirk unique from all the others. It should be celebrated, enjoyed & left as it is... One of the many reasons we can't stop at just one. :vcool: :vcool:

You can tighten it easily by increasing gently the amount of tension that spring latch that holds the bottom door in place has on it. The NVA sometimes removed the bayonet and put grass under the latch. Since we are not at war I would say if it ain't broke don't fix it! Another words like th guy above said leave it alone. People trying to fix things that aren't really broke are a great cause of actually broken parts, try and remember that and it will save you a bunch of trouble. How do I know that? I am a hard learner! Bill

'39 Prewar probably tighter tolerances, '43 Mother Russia was in a Serious war and trying to survive; hence looser tolerances, coupled with it's a battlefield rifle, but it still works, Not to worry about a little noise...
