Which to Shoot?
Which to Shoot?
I recently acquired two Mosins. Both are 91/30s from Izhevsk. One is a 1939 with a pre-war stock and the other is a 1943 with a post-war stock. All serial numbers match on both. Both are in very good to excellent condition, but the 43 is in a little better condition than the 39.
I plan on shooting one and putting one up to keep in the best condition possible. Is either one more valuable than the other? Which one should I shoot and which one should I save?
Thanks
P.S. - I'm a complete Mosin noob.

id shoot both but if only could shoot one id shoot the 43 and save the 39
Re: Which to Shoot?
Shoot them both and keep the better shooter as your regular shooter. Not that it matters, because you will have 8 more in 6 months.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Yeah, originally one of these was for a friend but I decided to keep both. I guess I already caught the bug.

Re: Which to Shoot?
Definately shoot both

Let me make a short, open, blanket comment. There are no good guns. There are no bad guns. Any gun in the hands of a bad man is a bad thing. Any gun in the hands of a descent person is no threat to anyone--- except bad people. -- Charleton Heston
Guns are not good, they are not evil. Save those descriptions for the people holding the firearm. -- Unknown
1943 Izhevsk
1937 Izhevsk
1935/48/50 Tula (hex)
1939 Tula (laminate stock)
And many other firearms

I would shoot the 43 first anyway.

It strikes me as kind of neat the way we are at different times in our collection lives. I am lucky if I buy 5 or 6 a year these days and most of them are trade fodder. I have not bought a refurb since last year and it was a great stocked 91/59 I could not resist due to the wood being slightly tiger striped. Bill

Shoot both of them, shoot one while the other one cools off at the range.

Re: Which to Shoot?
Why not? Collectors always buy guns that only the insane would shoot
Some relics are best left to the collection wall rather that the firing range.

That will end once you find your first true "relic" the one with no headspace, cracks, deep rust, loose bolt parts. Of course you could always fire it with a string.

Re: Which to Shoot?
I have multiples of several different rifles in my collection, especially when it comes to my Mosin Nagants. This being the case I tend to only shoot one example of each kind. I initially shoot them all to check for proper function but limit the wear and tear on some of the more uncommon pieces. For instance, I have a depot built IX43 K98 Mauser and an RC BNZ 43 mauser. The shooting experience is the same so I shoot the BNZ. Why take the chance of something breaking on the more rare piece??
