revolver nipple

If it fires black powder, it is discussed here.

revolver nipple

Post by warhawk77 »

Is there any way to take these off with out the nipple wrench? I would love to give my pistols a good cleaning but I can't find a wrench locally and I don't know anyone that might have one.

I could order one but I don't like to wait so if there is a way to remove them with out damaging them that would be great. But If I have to wait I guess I can. Maybe if I put the revolvers deep in the closet I won't see them, out of sight out of mind as they say.

Some people buy a 1/4" socket set and cut a notch out of the socket that is the closest fit. You should have the proper wrench , Dixie Gun Works can provide it, or Track of the Wolf.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I don't want to wait but sounds like it would be my best option. Really wish I could find one local

Definately order one if you can't get one locally. It shouldn't take too long to get it. I got lucky and found one in the patch box of the hawken I bought haha.

I don't know if its the time of year or what but locally there are few choices for BP. Here in indiana you can't hunt deer with rifles so muzzle loading is pretty big but just can't find any good places to buy gear.

Did find one on midway USA but they are charging $3 for any order less then $25 so I need to find something else I can use that they have in stock. Found lots of stuff but they are out of stock.

Its the same way here. Muzzle loading isn't very popular because regular rifles are allowed. Seems like the only time you can find anything for black powder is right near the start of muzzleloader season. And even then there isn't much.

I have one more place to check. This weekend starts a week long festival and they open up Fort Wayne (replica of the 1812 fort used in the war) they have all kinds of cool stuff. Lots of muskets, cannons and some civil war gear so hoping to find some cool new toys.

Cabelas.com is busting at the seams with black powder gear. I bet they have it. Getting the correct wrench is worth the wait. After all, we are all waiting........ for something or other.

Also, go to the auto part store and ask for a tube ( or can) of anti seize lube. Take a small amount of this and apply it to the threads of each nipple to prevent it's locking up from fouling.

I have read about putting the grease on the threads and I was wondering if the auto parts stuff would be the same thing. Guessing that would be cheaper.

I checked cabelas online and nothing under $20 but I don't have one in driving range of here.

Track of wolf has them for less then $10 and shipping can't be to much.

No, anti seize is special stuff formulated using graphite and capable of withstanding high temperature and pressure. It's used on anything you do not want to rust up tight on a piece of machinery. Spark plugs, wheel lug nuts, suspension components, and so on. Go easy with it as it can be messy.

They sell a universal wrench that has four sizes on it like a drill key, try to get that one as then you will be ready for the next BP shooter :)

In case we forgot to say, the nipples are not all the same, they do not all use the same tool, you need to get one that fits your revolver. Go by brand name Uberti, Pietta, CVA, and so on.

I didn't know they where different. I was looking at this one http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categorie ... 8/1/NW-140

But Cabelas has this one http://www.cabelas.com/product/Pedersol ... l+Products That is the only one that is anything like a drill key.

The one from Midway USA has some bad reviews so staying away from that one.

Either one of these would likely work.

1/4X20 bolts make great nipple wrenches when drilled out, and notched correctly. It is very easy to do. I recommend using grade 5 bolts. 8's are too hard to work, unless you have the right equipment, and regular bolts can bend out. I have a nipple wrench a freind made for me years ago when I fed his montain man frenzy, and nudged him into buying a Lyman Plains rifles and the matching pistol.

Dang that entropy!

And no, it wasn't Rongo, although he did buy a .45 kentucky-type from me when the 4-H sold off their "old-fashioned" BP's. (dave wanted to keep the in-lines. I have nothing against in-lines, but I prefer traditional BP guns. )
