The only problem with the SVT 40 in Canada is that it is to tempting to drill that rivet out , LOL

Well we were joking around on another thread here, and I suggested I load up the boat with SVT 40's and come across to Syracuse and do some trading like in the old days. After all, a crate of 7.62 x 54r ammo is double up here, that it is on your side of the fence. JYD mentioned that we would all end up in the hoosegow if we tried that, and that got me to thinkin.
Don't we have free trade?
Oops slap me in the face!
Free-trade only comes into play when guys in suits close down all industry, throw the middle class out of work, send our livelihoods {as well as the original patents for whatever was being made}, off to the third word, roll us back to 1977 wages, and then blame us and raise taxes. :angry4:
Since our little free-trade deal wouldn't cause any hardship or misery for anybody, of course it would be illegal!

I'm sure the holdup was at the border. Ya know how they are these days? lol I will put Jim's info up at my local gun shop, which is selling a couple of crates of SVT 40's right now. I'm sure others from this area will give him a shout. My gas port is set at 1.3 and just from what I've read, the 150 gr. Privi around here, would be the best ammo to feed it. Then just cross my fingers and hope I don't run into these mag/feeding issues I'm reading about.
If I do.... then learn how to tune it.

I sure wish I could have the troubles of trying one out. Wayyyy too high priced here. Still trying to figure out how to get one across the border.

First posting here. Glad to be with you.

I understand the worries or concerns about corrosive ammo in your SVT40. I will point out that the rifle was designed to be shot with this ammunition, and the example you have has probably seen countless rounds of the stuff.

Cleaning the gas system is not a difficult task. Simply remove the cup from the piston, unscrew the piston, and using a drift, tap out the regulator towards the rear of the gas block. Wipe down your parts with a suitable solvent, Hoppes #9 works pretty good, and reassemble. It takes maybe 2 minutes total to disassemble and reassemble this system. With the system disassembled, I use a pipette to drop a couple drops of solvent into the threaded portion of the gas block, and run either a bore brush or a q tip through there to spread it around and dry it out. There is an opening in the top of the gas block into which I gently push a suitably sized drill bit in and out a couple times to be sure the gas port in the barrel or the gas block is not occluded. I guess the original cleaning kits had a punch of sorts to accomplish this, but I don't have one of those.

To reassemble, press the regulator in from the rear, and gently, using fingers only, snug up the regulator by threading in the piston until you meet resistance, indicating that the regulator is seated in the gas block. Using your tool, align the regulator marks with the line on the gas block for the setting you have chosen, then snug down the piston. Voila. Nothing moves and it all works according to design. --Oh. And don't attempt to adjust the regulator without first having loosened the piston a skosh, or you may ruin the wrench flats on the regulator.

The non corrosive ammunition might alleviate some of this effort, but the difference in price between that and the surplus ammo makes this little bother worthwhile to me.

Hope this helps you guys.

You don't. Unless you are a licensed firearms importer it would mean prison.

A/C really nice rifle you picked up there. :Drool1: I had one in the 90's and like a fool let it go a few years later. Since rifles can't come down from Canada we'll take some of that Canadian air our way if you can arrange it.
