A new Mosin owner and his 91/30

Post by Acerpower »

Happy New Year!
I just picked up my brand new 70 year old rifle yesterday, and since my wife was at work and the kids were sleeping I spent my New Year's eve cleaning off the Cosmoline.
From what I've learned thanks to this forum is it's a 1942 Izhevsk?
It was imported by Century arms and cost me $100.

Here's a few pics of my new(old) toy....................

...............sorry the pictures are a bit random, not sure what you guys would like to of it.

“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Nice one acer, beautiful stock, very nice bolt, and rough as a cob receiver-just the way the wartime production guns were. It is the best example of wartime receiver I have ever seen. Outstanding! I bet she shoots great!

Nice rifle! Congrats and Happy New Year :)

In photo #3 looks like it has an expedited receiver, but in photo #4, it looks rounded. Not sure. Very cool rifle either way!

You just bought a piece of history and got a great deal in the process :)

Welcome aboard!

You will find out soon that it is the best $100 ever spent. She looks like a nice one to me. I think it is a sxpedited reciever that they spent a little more time finishing it. :vcool: :vcool:

Thanks everyone.
Hopefully it will be a good shooting rifle, provided that I actually put the gun together correctly after I stripped and cleaned it.
I think I got it right but since it's my first time with this particular firearm I still a little nervous to pull it's trigger the first time. :big shock:

I can't imagine how you'd get it wrong. As long as there are no parts left over or missing.

Nice looking gun, love the stock on it! As far as putting it together, did you check the firing pin length? There are several YouTube videos that show how to do it.

Thanks for the tip.
Glad I didn't shoot it yet because it was a little long.
This is the second time this forum has saved me some grief.
First I learned about the pin holding the trigger can fall out when the receiver is removed from the stock, I did it over the box the rifle came in and it saved me from loosing it.
Now this tip might have saved me some serious injury or death.
Thanks again!

I like to research things as much as I can before I try them and this forum has been quite valuable to me so far.

acerpower.. as a new owner myself first thing i did was read everything i could on my new best friend.... firing pin length, headspace, and zeroing ( sighting in)etc etc... i am familiar with modern weapons and how they function, but not something as badass as this... if the firing pin pierces the primer too deeply you can get gas from the propellent back into your face.. headspace is just as vitally important as well. if either of these goes bad for.. things will go bad for you... read, read, read... ask ask ask.. that how a newbie like me learned..and its frickin' fun... history is cool and so are the weapons they used..... these guys are great here and will share the knowledge the have freely... happy hunting and welcome home! do not shoot it if you are not 100% sure you are not going to maim yourself... as for me , i feel 100 frickin' % totally safe to fire my weapon now... do your homework and you'll be just fine.... cheers from a newbie.
