Just a note ... I live in a city, and some 3 year old a few blocks away from me just died after being shot - in his kitchen - from a stray round that penetrated the house siding and hit him in the head.

Wow, that just kinda changes everything. You can't be too careful and for all obvious reasons, I can see concerns. After an incident, things change. I would probably rent a skid loader and knock out a berm to at least ease all concerns.
Re: I need some opinions.
Back when we built mine up, we got a bunch of railroad ties (for free) and stacked them up to build a wall about 4' high by 16' wide. We then boxed in both sides at a slant, sort of like an over-sized BB trap. Then I stopped at a place giving away free fill dirt after work and piled it up behind the wall and sides. It took a few trips and a few hours, but it turned out nice. There were enough tiny ledges you could set bluerocks on, the wood worked well to staple up targets and the ties and dirt ate ammo like frogs on flies. The whole thing was built for no cost, just a bit of stacking and shoveling time

Re: I need some opinions.
If a dozer is a no go, tires stacked and filled with earth, they take alot of abuse, I did our range that way, a row of tires stacked 4 high, filled with earth, placed railroad ties in front of the tires, stacked even with the top, to attach targets and whatnot. I even planted flowers in the tires. Been through 2 sets of ties, but the tires/earth remain, and flowers bloom.
I said I was an addict. I didn't say I had a problem.
Re: I need some opinions.
I'd have to ask a few questions to really answer your question, but I have to agree from the pictures it looks like you haven't a very high berm. Any way, how much land are you on? How far to your neighbor's house? How far down range to the nearest house that direction? Here in Michigan you a 150 yards safety zone. I am on 7 acres and I backup to state land and I don't shoot on my property (I also have an asshole neighbor). So I just avoid the hassle and go to the range to shoot. So really I can't give you any real advice sorry. You look like you have the room to shoot at your place though.

Build a nice big berm.... It's a great excuse to play with power equipment. Never wrong to play it safe.

I agree with everyone that recommends building a berm and talking to your local LEO. Better safe than sorry.

Re: I need some opinions.
I wouldn't shoot that way. There's too much vegetation there for some unknown person to be lurking in.
Remember the fourth rule of firearm safety: "Always be sure of your target and what is behind it."!!
Get somebody with a blade to do a berm and then get rid of the vegetation.

Re: I need some opinions.
Does your town have a cleanup day? My town does and charges 5 bucks/tire now to get rid of them. I guess to cover the cost of cutting them in half. I would think any landfill or tire business would be happy to have someone take them off their hands.avenger wrote:Or a shovel...thats all i got haha....If i was to take the tires stacked 4 high filled with dirt..where could i get cheap bald tires or what not for that use?Rongoman wrote:Build a nice big berm.... You see in this world there are two kinds of people my friend, those with loaded guns... and those who dig. You dig.

An ad on craigslist; WANTED! Old used tires" will get you more than you need. I would still dig out that berm though.... Go to your local rental place & rent a bobcat for a day. Good times, great fun & you'll get a sweet berm for your troubles.

Re: I need some opinions.
You have two separate issues.
One is the range
and
two is the neighbor.
Fix the range because you can't be too careful....not possible.
The neighbor may be right or wrong about the range, but if you posted "No Trespassing" signs properly, I would remind him of that. Second, I'd let him know if he touches one of your rifles without permission on your posted "No Trespassing" property (and he has not been invited on the property), that you are going to beat him over the head with it. He needs to know that he can't take advantage of your property or touch your property. Is this your property, or is this a relations property? It will make a difference. Setting boundaries and fences with neighbors is very important to keeping "good neighbors".
Fix the range and get it approved by a Sheriff. We are in the city and I can only use the "NRA approved" range in the city. It has a big advantage because if something get away from there, it it the ranges problem. For you, it is your problem.

Yeah hes always been like that...our neighbor....(the one in the white house in the last pic) wants him gone..this guy bothers everyone in my area badly...plus when my grandpa was still alive 7+ years ago...he talked to him once..and said..that guy has a problem and told me to stay away from him loldolk wrote:You have two separate issues.

Re: I need some opinions.
So it sounds unlikely that your neighbor is ever going to be your friend. The ideal situation would be if you guys were friends and he would shoot with you, but it sounds like he won't have it. For messing with your guns and trespassing what he needs is a good ole COUNTRY ASS-WHOOPING! But that would not help your cause.
think about it from the neighbors shoes. All they hear is a lot of shooting, and if they are your typical gun fearing liberals you have to get it right.
Get the berm built. Forget the shovel. That is like eating a mexican food buffet with a freaking chopstick! And get your approval from local law enforcement!

Re: I need some opinions.
Some comments: Free tires are usually available from any place that sells new ones, usually a smaller place has to pay to get rid of them so you will be saving them money. Check with the NRA concerning range plans and make sure what ever you build is within local ordinances. Rather than ask the Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff that responds to your call, check with the highest guy you can get and I'd also check with the Prosecuting Attorney (State's Attorney, District Attorney whatever) because if God Forbid something bad happens these are the guys you will be dealing with. Get names and ordinance numbers to back up anything you do. Post prominent "No Trespassing signs" and I'd even think about sending a registered letter to your neighbor telling him that the range is 1) legal and 2) off limits without an invitation.

Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

No actually he hunts...but he acts like he knows all this stuff when he doesnt..hes like that with everything he does...trying to tell us about gun safety..yet a few weeks ago..him and his brother came from MY land..from hunting..and he was swinging his gun around? ive also seen him shoot across the road infront of my house..toward a hill more shallow than mine? which on the other side is another road and a house? He just has no sense whatsoever..Also..i like the railroad tie idea as well..any suggestions as to where to get those?bunkysdad wrote:So it sounds unlikely that your neighbor is ever going to be your friend. Re: I need some opinions.
Something to think about before you put tires or crossties in a backstop.
If you do much shooting there, there is a chance that someday you, or someone else, may want to "mine" the area for the lead. Sifting through dirt is far easier than trying to dig through old tires or crossties.
