Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
Re: Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
Black powder cartridge so i will say.....Very addicting to even sniff it. Hold it and you will start to sweat. Shoot it and you will spend all your time and money in pursuit of the dream.

Re: Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
I have a Marlin 336 and it was the best $20.00 I ever spent. I won it in a contest at my gun club. But don't run out and get something modern as a back up while you have a M/N. A carbine is very handyin the woods.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Re: Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
Sweet! Got another question for yall. What pistol do yall carry for protection while hunting? Any recommendations? My cousin was chased by a pack of coyotes while hunting a few months back so I know its a good idea haha. I'm just not sure what to consider carrying. I have a little lcr 357 that will work but its not exactly made to hunting protection and more for concealed carry.

Re: Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
Depends on what you're protecting yourself from. .357 is no slouch and should be ok for Coyotes. We have ferrel hogs, coyotes, wolves (Rare), Mountain Lions (Rare) and Black Bear. Not to mention packs of wild dogs. Oh and to answer your question I have a Ruger Redhawk .44Mag.ponycarman wrote:Sweet! Got another question for yall. Re: Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
I don't hunt anymore, but when I did I packed a .357 mag. When I go shooting I always have it with me, oldest trick in the book is to hear target practice going on, track the sound to the lone shooters location, wait for the guns to be empty and then attack. Shitbird tries that with me and his brains will be all over the range, because I never target shoot with the revolver I am wearing at the time. I will swap off with the Blackhawk when I want to shoot the GP. I worry more about the two legged critters out there than the four legged ones.

Re: Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
The worst I could come in contact with would be black bear. With that said though that would be a very very small chance of a run on with one. It would more than likely be a coyote, wild dog, or small wild feline like a bob cat or something. I'm sure the 357 round would be fine but I guess it was the pistol I was questioning more than the 357. The pistol is light for easy concealment and while no slouch. I was thinking something a little heavier duty. Possibly a 1911 for semi auto or glock 10mm. If a revolver I was thinking like the ruger gp100 or something similar. I don't know though.

I carry a Ruger in 45lc loaded to the hilt with 3oo grain bone smashers. We have the pleasure of having big ol black bears up to 600 or so pounds and the occasional grizz that are ...well alot more mostly. Throw in the large pack of wolves roaming the neighborhood and you have what i like to call breakfast for them when i am walkin around. I run into bears all the time and have crossed tracks of mountain lions and wolves. And here i am a slow fat delicious looking white meat guy roaming around and i must look like a great meal to them. Lots of ammo too.

300gr HP is what I use in my RedHawk too. The damn things so long I might as well just use the rifle though, lol.desdem12 wrote:I carry a Ruger in 45lc loaded to the hilt with 3oo grain bone smashers. As a teen I hung you on the walnut 2 gun rack that I made in woodshop just for you. Everyone else in the class made checker boards but my teacher gave me permission to make you a special rack. After I got married I took you with me and placed you and a few other friends in a nice glass display cabinet. I never killed a deer with you but we sure tried. I know it embarassed you when I split that squirrel with your deadly round, but we hadn't seen a single deer for three days in that cold rainy blind in East Texas and the squirrel was laughing. We got the last laugh that day. I've never been the same since some low life castration deserving thug kicked in my door and the glass cabinet and took you away from me. Don't take it personally that I have often hoped that your muzzle was packed with mud when the thieving low life pulled your trigger.

Does anyone have any experience with the 460 rowland round and conversion? Looks like a nifty choice for a woods gun.

Re: Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
At least one of each will do. I have more autos but that is only cause they were 03 eligable. I have one single action revolver, a ruger super blackhawk and i love it. No double actions yet. I'm not to sure on the Rowland but it seems like you would have to get a 1911 to start with and then modify it with a kit and then put a compensator on it. Seems like a lot of trouble to get to 44 mag when you can get a 44 mag to begin with alot cheaper.

Re: Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
Yeah that might be an interesting option to look into later on. Right now Im thinking a ruger super blackhawk 5 1/2 in barrel in 44 magnum. That should take care of anything I would ever come up against in the woods. I would just have to pratice to get used to the single action setup. Sounds like a plan haha.

Re: Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
You can't go wrong with a ruger of any kind. I think the 44 mag is a great caliber too. If you need a better bullet there are alot of variations youcan get for reloading them. They will kill a black bear for sure just don't shoot them in the head. Good luck with your quest.

Da revolver for dealing with people, SA for dealing with critters, when real paranoid I might carry both.

Actually I already thought about that. I will probably keep my lcr on me as well. I think that might be a good idea. Kinda a backup just in case.

Re: Recomendations for a good hunting rifle
Been thinking. Instead on carrying so much extra stuff would a 4in gp100 be good for carry in the woods? My fear is the with so much extra equipment and weight it will sap alot of the fun from actually hunting. And I already have a 357 so they would use the same ammo. What do yall think? I know the 357 round is pretty potent. And even better I can just use my current pistol until I can get the other.
