Thompson Center Arms Hawken freed from layaway!

If it fires black powder, it is discussed here.

Thompson Center Arms Hawken freed from layaway!

Post by ponycarman »

I was able to set my muzzleloader free from layaway today. Yay! Can't wait to shoot this thing. The blueing is pretty nice. Stock has a couple minor scuffs but nothing bad. There is some rust but nothing that looks too bad  . The rust is in where the nipple screws in and in the barrel. Nothing heavy though so it should clean up just fine I think. The set trigger is nice. Very light. I found a cap still stuck to the hammer lol. And apparently the shop I bought it from hasn't sold very many black powder firearms. I had two people try to get me to fill out the transfer paperwork lol. Then another employee spoke up and told them .

Pic time!

And I found a nipple wrench in the patchbox :D

Great looking rifle, did you stick the rammer down the bore to make sure it isn't still loaded, that cap under the hammer worries me.

Yep that was the first thing I did. The cap look very smooshed and deformed. But it is definitely unloaded.

Thanks des the stock is pretty nice. The grain shows out well in the pics and the flaws are somewhat hidden :)

Time to get a bullet mold, the lee molds only run around $25 shipped.

Yeah I need to get one. Thinking about getting one for the conical maxi hunter bullets too. But I have to gather the other stuff needed for the casting too.

Start collecting all the scrap lead you can find now, it is getting harder to come by, or at least more expensive when you do find it if you have to buy it anyway.

I haven't seen any scap lead around here but I haven't really been looking. I'm not sure where to start looking. Have to get all the other stuff needed to cast too. Yay more stuff to buy lol.

Your local scrap yards are a good place to start. Tire shops don't use lead weights anymore, mostly zinc now so you can forget them.

I sell lead ingots when I have them, but my last production run was sold even before I made them.

I'll have to do some looking around. I'm not sure if the local scrap yards would sell it to me. Most of them are these large corperate style yards. I have never asked it they would sell stuff to customers.
