If it fires black powder, it is discussed here.

First BP rifle...now what do I do

Post by SA1911a1 »

I did the easy part. I found a Thompson Center Hawkins percussion rifle at an antique store and bought it. I had no real feel for the value of the thing, but it sold for less than a 91/30......

.50 cal. with double set, adjustable triggers.

I bought it for trade goods, I just can't see myself setting up a new hobby.

This is not a new hobby just an adjusted one. Get some basic stuff for it and give it a try first. .490 balls and a pound of cheap ffg black powder or substitute and some no.11 caps. A cheapo powder measure and some pre lubed patchs and you are good to go. 60 grains of powder aught to do it or maybe 70.
Who knows you might like it.

I was thinking of adding some accessories and making it tacticool.. Laser, flashlight, reflex sights etc. Do they make quad rails for this rifle?

Sure glue screw and tattoo the stuff to the barrel and have at it. Don't forget the 12x50 lighted scope for shooting looong distances over 50 yards (upto at least 100  )

You should send it to me....I just passed on a CVA .45 rifle, didn't want to add yet another caliber to buy stuff for, I already have a .50 in line so wouldn't have to buy a whole lot than what I already have!

I want to see it with before and after pictures. As it is now and once it's been propertly 'Pimped" You know, Given the Mall Ninja treatment. As these don't come with bayonets you are going to have to waste a rail for one, so can I suggest a dual rail for your optics? one is off set about 45 degrees so you can crank the butt over to line up the back up optic. As a primary I'd use a scope, at least 25 power. Oh, do you plan to have this "Chromed" ? I'd put a vertical fore grip on it as well. If you put the bayonet on the bottom, you might have enough room for your fore grip on that rail. Just make sure you can still get to the ram rod.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I will silver solder the bayonet to the rifle. Chrome is tacky, I will go with nickle. I haven't considered the vertical fore grip, thanks for the suggestion.

Since I can't get away without photos, I will show you the before here:

You get powder, ball, patches, powder measure, powder horn, caps, vent pic, capper, bullet mold , small Lee production pot and lead. We then teach you how to use the. Cap locks like this ar enot that hard to get the hang of. You also call the company to get an owners manual that will tell you the proper powder charges.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I don't think so, Jim. I really picked this up, only because it was under-priced, and I thought it would make a great trade or GB item, to raise funds for buying Mosin-Nagants.
