Just for fun, and out of a bit of curiosity, I scraped off all of the grease that I could from my new M91/30 1937 Tula and put it in an old baby food jar. I used a small wooden stir stick and an old hotel key card. I scraped off all that could be scraped and picked it out of the receiver, bolt, rear sight, magazine and other nooks and crannies. Not as much as I thought there would be, but, quite a bit too.
It's about a quarter of an inch plus. I am guessing that the grease that I wiped off with a rag would probably increase the total by about 25% or so...

That nasty old grease worked though, didn't it? I'll take it.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
This is a joy that you newer collectors have to deal with, five years back the rifles were coming out of the crates lightly oiled, or even dry, preserved in the crates with desiccant paper. The only time I saw a mess like this was with a Turk Mauser, and even they were not so.....wet.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

You think that rifle was bad, I have a Greek return 03' Springfield that came from the cmp..... You wanna talk about grease, lets just put it this way, I had to go get a spoon to find the bolt handle, not to mention, to get the bolt out
And it's not so much that I have too much time on my hands rideandslidejim, I'm taking my time because once I finish this one, I'll be sniffing around the 'net, the gun show this weekend and my LGSs for another one! I'm trying to make this dose 'o mosin last...
