First shots - need stock extender
First shots - need stock extender
I took my Mosin to the range today and fired it for the first time. First things first...it was a blast. The recoil was not as bad as I thought it would be, less then my 12 gauge shotgun. I also tried shooting with the bayonet. It sure makes the rifle look long. Getting used to the sights took a little time, but I was at least able to hit the target at 100 yards. I do have to aim a little low, but at least I hit paper. My rifle did not exhibit any sticky bolt. After a few rounds I did wipe the chamber to clean up any cosmoline that I may have missed. I did not see any after the first 20 rounds, so i stopped doing it. I shot about 100 rounds to put the gun (and me) through the paces. One thing I do need to take care of though. I am 6' 4" with a large frame. The stock on this gun is way too short. Without modifying the stock, what would you veterans recommend I use to extend the stock?

A Limbsaver slip-on recoil pad will take care of the length.

Red I'm surprised you didn't think of this. "Duct Tape, It's the handyman's best friend" Sorry I couldn't resist.
Seriously though the Limbsaver is a great idea. My shooting buddy has one and he swears by it.

I forgot about the Limbsaver slip on. Anyone know what size I would need to get? Also, to top off the great day my order for 880 rounds of Bulgarian Surplus ammo came in today. Received 2 440 round spam cans of 1972 silver tip ammo. Luckily it did come with the opener. Can't wait to try them out, although I expect they won't perform much different than the Brown Bear I've been using.

Not that great for recoil, but will add an inch in length.

I'm 6'4" and run 230 lbs or so, I bought one of those, didn't do what I wanted as far as recoil reduction but did extend the length of pull. Ended up going with a nylon closed cell pad that I can switch between all the Mosin's as well as my BP .50 and the 12 gauge.

Agree with the recoil part, but thought he was looking mainly to extend the stock ! Plus the look fairly nice. i have seen them in brown also.

Re: First shots - need stock extender
I just use a folded up towel. Adds about an inch, and should be free. Plus it gives you something soft to set the rifle on between shots and what not. May seem hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy-ish, but it works well for me, and I'm 6'2"
Re: First shots - need stock extender
The small size fits well.

Oh yeah, it extends the stock real well. I still have it, stashed away with all my other "goodies" in the box of "stuff"...
Re: First shots - need stock extender
Thanks for all of the replies. My local Cabela's has the small Limbsaver in stock, and I still have a gift card from Christmas that will more than cover it. I'll pick one up this Saturday. I just need to get a sling and I'll be set. Can't wait to go back out. Besides my 1938 Izhevsk Mosin, I have a 1954 Izhevsk SKS that shoots well...will make a nice pair at the range.

Where do you shoot at, Red...I'm just south of you a bit, I go down to a buddy's place south of Desoto and shoot on his property, figured most ranges around here don't like Mosin's OR steel core ammo!
Re: First shots - need stock extender
J Henges off I44 allows steel core ammo but they have strict rules against rapid fire. So does the Arnold Gun Club, but you have to have a membership or be with someone who does to get in. I am told the shooting range out by Busch Wildlife also allows steel core ammo but I have never been out there myself to find out.

Re: First shots - need stock extender
I have two brothers that own property near Mark Twain Lake. There is a gun range there run by the Army Core of Engineers. That is where I do most of my shooting. Busch Wildlife has gotten so crowded the last time I was there I waited over an hour, and could only shoot for an hour.

Re: First shots - need stock extender
before I got my Limbsaver I made my own with a piece of foam rubber and duct tape. Works very well.

Since you said recoil is light.... attach an additional 10 metal butt plates.

At least those would be correct pieces and not a 2x4 nailed to the end with 37 nails, a sock stuffed with old underwear or a brick. That's redneck.rideandslidejim wrote:You know your a redneck when ------![]()
