Project pistol I just picked up
Re: Project pistol I just picked up
No, not the Lemat. It's one of the 1858's that was produced years ago, the guy shot it six times, cleaned it and seasoned it and stuck it away. Swapped him a 1923 Izhevsk hex 91/30 that was in fantastic condition.

Re: Project pistol I just picked up
You swapped a milsurp for a reproduction Rem '58? How come I can't find guys who want to do that when I sell some commercial gun or other? All they ever want to give me is cash, no Garands, Mosins, nothing.

Re: Project pistol I just picked up
I traded lead for a nice Pietta target model '58 a couple of years back. It's got the internals tuned up, nice shooter, it's gotten harder to find them used at good price since they started getting more popular.

What are you needing that you can't find?
JYD, this was one if them "joking" comments that a guy jumped on and ran with it, I had no idea he'd take it seriously, the pistol, when it was available sold for right under $400 at Cabelas and I had $125 in the hex. Heck, I only got it a week or so ago, hadn't even shot it! But it was in fantastic condition finish and stock, bore was bright with a faint hint of frosting but you'd have to really look close to even notice it.

Well its not that I can't find it at all, I just haven't been able to find it locally. I have to check a few more places. I'm hoping to at least be able to find some powder locally. Just to save the hazzmat fee. I can get the round ball, caps, and wadding with no problems.

In that price range it must be the target model, this is the one with modern sights, they run around $400, the basic model is $250 or less when it's on sale. They target sights are a huge improvement.mogunner wrote:What are you needing that you can't find?

Well he did say large!
I'm betting it's a Remington New Army "Bufflo" revolver. Which BTW I'd love to have if only they where steel framed! Why Pietta makes them with brass frames is something I'll never understand.

Re: Project pistol I just picked up
They do make a stainless target model, does it have target sights and checkering on the stocks?

Re: Project pistol I just picked up
That's the Buntline target model in stainless, a hard to come by, and expensive option from Pietta. Remington never made these of course, but the barrel is based on the Colt '73's Columnist Ned Buntline had custom made for various lawmen like Wyatt Earp in the 1880's. Remington did make a carbine length barrel for the '58, and mounted a shoulder stock on it. All smiles here, that revolver should be a very good shooter, especially at distance.

He said he bought it ten years ago, fired it a few times, then cleaned and seasoned it and never shot it again. He's a pretty avid shooter, just goes through a lot of firearms swapping, selling and buying and this one escaped notice until just recently.

Re: Project pistol I just picked up
How did he season stainless steel? That light frost in the bore is probably just the machine marks from it's manufacture, it's unlikely that rust or corrosion would have had a chance to do much damage if any. Stainless does not corrode in the same way as ordinary steel, if anything corrosion would be very patchy.mogunner wrote:He said he bought it ten years ago, fired it a few times, then cleaned and seasoned it and never shot it again. He told me that he cleaned it, then "seasoned" it with Wonderlube, I'm thinking he means he swabbed the bore and cylinders down with a good coating of it before packing it away. At least he didn't use a petroleum product on it!

Re: Project pistol I just picked up
To me, the leMat is one of the ugliest revolvers ever made. The only thing attractive about this revolver is the 16 gauge barrel under the .41 or .36 caliber main barrel.

There was no need for it, stainless steel is only stain resistant, not rust proof, but it is very stain resistant.

Pietta's LeMat is .44 ( .451) with a .20 gauge shotgun barrel.
