Some Shooting (target pics)
Some Shooting (target pics)
It was such a nice day up here in WI, although a lot bit windy, that I decided to go and see how the M44 I picked up in March would perform! The other day I sighted it in at 25, then 50 yards, behind dad's house, but that is the extent of the range I could go because the field beyond that was mud soup. I had to drift the front sight some, and I really wanted to test it out at a longer distance, so I ended up at McMiller Sports Center in Eagle, WI this afternoon. I warmed up at 50 yards with 20 rounds then graduated over to 100 yards. I put 10 down range to get a feel for it, and here's what the second 10 did (from a bench, ):
I was very pleased! I was aiming for the middle, and there were only two fliers. This is about the 3rd time in my 32 years of life on this planet that I've ever shot a rifle, and I'm very pleased with what I could with the open sights at this range. I'm sure the rifle is more capable then I am, but it will do for now. The rifle will serve as a hunting implement very well should I ever decide to use it. I was worried it was going to shoot gawd awful high, but I was very relieved to see what it could do at 100 yards. Even though it was windy as heck, I thought I'd go over to the 300 yard range, just for fun, and see what would happen. There were a couple others shooting at 200 yards, so that's what I did as well. Here's what happened with that (again, from a bench):
I was hoping to be able to just get A round on the paper, but I was pretty pleased! I wouldn't feel good taking a shot at this range whilst hunting, but considering my experience and skill level I was happy with the results. There was another guy next to me shooting some .30-06 scoped up and he didn't even get any on the paper (made my ego feel good, being able to hit the target w/open sights at that range). I had to really work at keeping both eyes open and focusing on the front sight while seeing the red circle. It was really hard to do, but if I closed one eye to sight I couldn't see the red circle at all.
It was a fun day. 60 rounds out of the M44, another 150 out of the 10/22 at the plinking range. I even found a box of Federal 150 gr soft point 7mm Remington Magnum that had 3 rounds in it on the ground at my station that fell out of someone's bag. Asked around, no one claimed it, and no one there shot that caliber (I don't either) that could take it. So, I now have ammunition for a gun I don't own. What a lot of brass that round has...

That looks good. At that long distance I am thinking the whole target was about the width of the front sight post.

Excellent Shooting!
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Let me give you some things I learned from shooting over the years! Go right now and find a person who is an certified instructor and pay for some learning. They will teach you the way to shoot and not get into bad habits. If you don't when you reach my age the bad habits are almost unremovable! I have a number of them that when I was your age I developed and was young and could over come with excellent eyesight and reaction time. Now I have neither and try as I might I can not remove those bad habits from my shooting. So go and get some lessons so all the good habits will be ingrained when you reach may age. Yeah by the way that sure ain't bad shooting which is even more a reason to get some instruction from a accredited instructor. You will not regret it when you get may age I promise!!!!!! Bill

He is only 32, he can still join the Marines and learn how to shoot
Good shooting, it's nice here but I am so buried in chores and spring cleaning that I can only do wish shooting at the moment.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Very carefully!

That's not likely to happen! I tried to get into Air Force Academy out of high school, but they did't want me because my physical echo cardiographs showed a hole in my heart, even though I wrestled, played football, and ran track. I don't think the Marines would want me either, plus my wife and 2 daughters wouldn't appreciate it much.Junk Yard Dog wrote:He is only 32, he can still join the Marines and learn how to shootGood shooting, it's nice here but I am so buried in chores and spring cleaning that I can only do wish shooting at the moment.

I'd love to be able to do that! Not in the cards right now, though.zeebill wrote:Let me give you some things I learned from shooting over the years!
