'57 matching Romanian

Post by Greasemonkey »

Here is an example of what I understand is, a somewhat rare Romanian SKS. It's an all number matching '57. I picked this up last month after quite a wait, luckily I had a history with the seller and he held it for me. Condition wise it's very good, also it included the cleaning rod and has the cleaning kit in the butt stock. The sling is the only issue, it's Chinese, I'm working on finding the original correct Romanian sling to complete it. All the numbers are matching including the stock, the gas tube, piston and rear sight which have the serial etched in them. The stock in the right side finger groove is stamped with what looks like MNBSCP along with normal arsenal stamps behind the receiver and right side butt stock has the triangle Cugir stamp. The seller was the original buyer from a distributor a few years ago, I asked about the finish, he stated other than a cleaning, some firing and the sling, that's the finish it came with.

The bottom 2 photos were the sellers photos, due to lighting, they show the stock alot better than my photos.
Enjoy :toast:

You are pulling out some real lovelies greasemonkey. :vcool:

Man, that's a sweet SKS GM. Thanks for posting the photos. After reading Drago's tutorial, I find myself looking more closely at marks. Not necessarily indicators for ex-DDR, but marks in general.

I would assume getting the cleaning kit with it isn't all that common? That's a nice one!

Glad you all like it, if it tells you any thing, it was just in the past 2 maybe 3 years I got into the Mosins and SKS's. Before then everything/anything milsurp was game, I traded off a number of retail rifles off to start collecting milsurps. All because of my first a beat to death Yugo 59/66 SKS I still have :D

MN Fan, usually the cleaning rod and kit are missing from Rommy SKS's

The only thing harder to find than a matching '57 is an original sling!

Super example. A real collectible.

Poor old girl! She needs one thing before she is a true original. Can't be original with out one of these!

So, you might as well send her to me so I can do a restoration job and take good care of her!

How much does an original Romainian SKS sling go for these days?

IF, and that is the big thing, they go all over the board. In the past year they have went as high as $80 that I have seen. I've heard some I think it was on Ebay went $100. Not sure there though. Awhile back a beat up one went $35 and another for $50. But, no one seems to be able to find even one at this time.
As I think Martin stated, you can find a matched rifle perhaps easier than you can an original first issued sling. I got my buy of the last two years on these because seller did not know what he had. These are so nice I just haven't had the heart to put them on rifles as of today. I just kind droolover these two specimens. They are so much in demand that they are really worth what you may want to sell one for. You see one sometimes on an auction on a really poor Romie rifle, with a high price. When you see that, the seller knows what he has regarding the sling. Sling has a bid price effect on a Romie rifle if the seller is aware.

The Romanian slings, when they do show up on e-bay, Gunbroker, etc. will usually net between $40-60. But I have seen them go as high as $75. Much like the two-piece leather slings for the Finn M27, M28, M28/30.

The one in the link above is actually an AK-47 sling, but it would be considered somewhat correct. A few Romanian SKS's came through with that style sling. Much like the Yugoslavians and Albanians, the Romanians utilized whatever they had on hand. However, you don't see the Chinese slings on Romanians like you might on an Albanian.

A Yugoslavian M59 sling might also work for you. These aren't the best pictures, but you can see the end tabs and buckle for comparison. They didn't come with the clip-on attachment like the AK slings.

Sure glad you said something Moose. Thanks for correcting the student here. I get a little gullable sometimes and believe what I read on these auctions. Then again he describes it saying ( I believe its a Romanian sks sling ) Ya, and so did I

Simply a rare example of Boss Hog being misinformed rather then not telling the truth .

It's Ok Boss Hog, I can well understand that your attention was mostly on Daisy when you bought it!

However, you and Greasemonkey watch for the style I posted, and be ready to just hit the BIN if they have one. Harder all the time to find.
Oh yes, watch for the color I posted. Some fakes have appeared time to time of plain brown leather. Collars were not correct either.

Yea, the Rushanian I think I will keep. The other mismatch and the all matching I think I am going to give up.
BAMA, I am flat out of space to put these SKS. So, two Romies and a few others need to go.
Romies, some Yugo's, Izhevsk, etc. Kind of culling this herd I guess is the best description.
