Information on Enfield "jungle carbines" Needed
Information on Enfield "jungle carbines" Needed
My local gun shop has what is purported to be an Enfield "Jungle Carbine" for sale. Being distracted by other matters, I did not examine the rifle closely but only looked across the counter at it hanging on the wall. The asking price was c. $265.
The only hard information that I have on it is the short mention in my eleventh edition of "Small Arms of the World" by Ezell.
Any further info or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

That strikes me as low for a Jungle Carbine. Any way that you can verify that it is a "real" carbine
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

If it has the lightening cuts around the shank of the barrel were it screws into the receiver then it's the real thing, the fakes do not have this.

Re: Information on Enfield "jungle carbines" Needed
There are several things that show it is a "true" No.5
Check this website out.
http://www.angelfire.com/vt/milsurp/no5.html
There is a hole in the end of the bolt "knob" (for lack of a better word). But remember, the bolt could be changed.
Also the one I watch is just to the right of the rear sight, that cut out is larger and can be seen while it is in the stock.
See how it is cut more towards the rear of the receiver right up to that screw head that holds the rear sight on. That is a give away.

A quick an easy tell for a fake is when the receiver is marked No 4 MK 1

Or it is stamped, "Santa Fe", on the barrel. These are the most faked Enfields. They cut down #4 rifles to make these and up until a couple of years ago you could buy a kit from Numrich to make one. Stock, flash hider and all.

Thank you, gentlemen!
I'll take a closer look at the rifle later this week, if it's still there.

If it checks out and its a nice rifle jump on it . Original finish would be messy black paint which could me worn or flaking. See if the numbers match and be sure to look at the bore. The first one SOG sent me years ago was a worn out dog that would key hole. Sent it back and they sent me an all matching beauty.

Pics of the junky dog one? No , that was a long time ago and I didn't keep it long enough. I should have kept the keyhole target. It was cool looking actually, the holes were perfect sideways bullet holes. Just think how that would feel to get hit with.

I have only ever had to send back two rifles before. Both Enfields with sewer pipes

Never sent any back, but then I always knew what I was getting before the deal was made, some had less than perfect bores, but I knew that in advance. I never had an Enfield come to me with anything less than a spotless bore, even the Bubba rifles, and the 1909 MKIII*

Only once, a special order a friend of mine who owned a gunshop back in the 90's sent in for me, Soviet SVT40. No problems with it, at least not any with condition or function, or SOG's service. Problems came later when a friend of mine played with it and launched critical parts out the window.

Re: Information on Enfield "jungle carbines" Needed
I finally got a close look at the rifle in question. It's a parts gun, with the importer/assembler name stamped on the barrel. Unfortunately, I forgot who it was. There is no trace of Number or Mark designation anywhere on the receiver that I could see. The distance from receiver to barrel band seems to be approximately correct, which threw me off for a few seconds.
Once again, thank you for the help, gentlemen.

That would be a steal at that price for a legit No. 5. I was fortunate enough to get one of these that shoots great. Some yayhoo refinished the stock on a all-matching 1947 No. 5 but I still love it.
