What to shoot.

Post by avenger »

I have shot my mosin about 40 times...its a blast to shoot...but i am running out of ideas of what to shoot...the dead computer hard drive was cool..straight through a thick metal hard drive like it is nothing...What are some of the things you enjoy shooting for fun with your mosin?

If I'm not shooting paper, I'll usually shoot at clays at 100-200 yards.

lol mosin!

We used to shoot water filled gallon milk jugs. I'm not sure that a 7.62 FMJ round would do anything but make a leaker out of it, but soft point 30-30 rounds used to make a pretty impressive display :)

Just now doing some last minute Christmas shopping, I saw a bag of those little green army men. I thought about grabbing one, but then remembered I don't have a place to shoot. Man, back in the day, I can't even guess at how many of those guys sacrificed their lives for my amusement. The Mosin would be like sending in Mach III artillery shells though :)

Buy a box of sporting clays, the orange make good targets and lay them up against a dirt berm, you get to see destruction with every hit.

Old Golf balls. They're a real challange laying on the ground. Usually put them on top of an old rail road tie where I normally go shooting.

I had never seen a milk jug fly so high as when I shot it with 7.62x54r!! At 100yrds I'm going to say it reached 30' in the air !! That was with a softpoint bear ammo!! Very fun!!

Here's one for you. Has to be in an open well ventilated area with nothing around that's flamable, like dry grass or leaves. Has to be a calm day. Sit a can of starting fluid slightly behind a candle..... ok you see where I'm going with this. Light the candle and go back about 75 to 100 yards. Shoot the can of starting fluid. Watch the fireball. Just about any aerosol product with at least a flamable propellant or flamable contents will work. A wide based candle is best. The ones that are about 2 inches or bigger in diameter are best. I probably don't have to tell you what happens if you substitute a small propane canister for the can of starting fluid.

Plastic bottles of all sizes are fun but fill them with colored water, has a much better affect when you hit them nicely in the center. Biggest disappointment I ever had was a gallon jug at 200 yards and a 22-250. The jug folded up like I used a vacuum on it instead of a varmint rifle. But a nice spray of water out the back, what got me was the twist on top was still on the jug.

What about Bowling Pins?
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I forgot to mention, clays are nice because they break down, no worry about pollution or cleanup like when you shoot up and old color TV :)

More like $15 for 135...As for the gong, surplus rounds will more than likely go right through it.
