1939 660 k98 more information please?

Post by VKT1941 »

I got this rifle from my grandad and from the research I've found it's a north fleet kreigsmarine rifle. The 660 manufacturing code is the Steyr plant in Austria and that's about all I know of the rifle and I'd like to know more of it. Thank you for anyone who helps me with this. I will post pictures if it becomes necessary.

Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG, Steyr of Austria as you already know, one of 17,426 rifles made in 1939 at that factory . A typical K98k, that's about all I know about them, the rest would be the typical is it matching serial number, are there capture papers, condition, that sort of thing.

Pictures would help immensely . I would need to see pics of the stock markings and the takedown disc. Is it marked Mod.98 or is it a G29/40? Too many unknowns with out photos....

With factory code 660 and the 1939 date it's a K98k for sure.

No the bolt is miss matched but the rest of the rifle matches itself. No capture papers rifling is strong and minor dents on the stock.

That answers the origin question then :) It's a post WW2 import before import markings were mandated in 1968. These are nice rifles to find, and expensive when you do. The mismatched bolt is typical, one former soldier saw the Germans surrendering some K98's, bolts on one pile, rifles on the other, surplus dealers who bought them as scrap after the war wouldn't have been able to match them back among the thousands of rifles.

You have to resize the pics to 640x480, or upload them to photobucket and link them into the reply box.

Yes, typical of the K98k, this was Germanys infantry rifle during WW2, yours is lower production than most, and that makes it more sought after. It's also original despite the mismatched bolt, original compared to the Russian refurbished, or Balkan used rifles. No import mark is a plus for some collectors, and you know the story of the rifle since it hit these shores in the early 1960's. Hold on to that rifle, this is the sort of thing Mauser collectors look for.
