M38 stock repair

Post by no4shot »

Was at a local gun shop yesterday and was sorting through a large pile of M38's and saw this stock. What do you suppose caused this repair needing to be done? All were 42 to 44 izzys for 250. Somehow one didn't find its way home with me.

But all the rest did? :)

I would have picked that one up. Kinda like the sad puppy at the pound.

I would have grabbed it right away, repairs of this type are rare on a Soviet refurb, or is this a Soviet refurb? Is this a Molot import? If so then it raises the possibility that this rifle, or at least it's stock was a Romanian return as I have seen many repairs in this exact style on Mosins associated with Romania. Repairs make a stock interesting.

My guess on the damage is a dropped rifle, battle damage :?: I do think that repair is really cool and very well crafted. Man I think at today's crazy prices the 250 for the M38 with the repair is not outrageously high. I might have brought it home.

The upper portion of the repair was either broken off or was seriously cracked so the new piece was reattached in a rather robust manner. I think somtimes, these repairs were the stock smiths showing off their abilities. As a novice wood-worker myself, I appreciate the skill involved in that repair.

I would have bought that rifle for the repair.

I would have bought it for the stock repair alone. It being an M38 just sweetens the deal.

It must be nice to find a LGS with a "large pile" of M38's I like that repair as well. The piece looks like it split clean, it could be a fault in the wood, done when being rearnseled, who knows?

I was thinking the same thing! My LGS's don't even have M91/30's. $250 for an M38 is a fair price in today's market, especially when you can pick through in person.

I love that stock repair. Makes that carbine unique from the others.

Wonderful craftsmanship, I would love to have that rifle just for the stock alone. :)

Sad part is its the third time I have made the 45 min trip just to look at the m38s. Everytime I have talked myself out of it because I would really like a m39. I like to shoot cmp and that just don't see myself shooting that at 200 yards.

but after seeing all of these comments maybe I should go back and layout the cash.... They all have the cut out for the m44 bayonet and have the refurb slashed box.... I assume those are all "bad"...

I know they ship as they are a seller on gun broker so maybe I could help hand pick for anyone interested if I go back...

Just checked and they don't have any on gb...

Probably over 100... just as many if not more Styr carbines...

I have seen some m39s for around that price so what Is stopping you? I am sure if you search one out you could get one. If I had to choose between those 2 I would choose m39 999.99% of the time. :o  (I would start to think about getting an m38 and then would come to my senses)

Oh I have been searching. Just waiting for the right one with the right price. Just looking for a good shooter with a good barrel and no cracked stocks and a decent price. I know its a tall order in todays market but sometimes good things happen when you can wait.

I have 3 m39s that were in that range. Last one was a whopping 250 otd. A nice unissued sako with a plum tinge on the barrel. Love that thing I do.  The other 2 were less then 20 bucks more. A unissued B barrel and a VKT. It can be done.

Those are great Brad. The price is a heck of a lot less than I have paid for the Burns guns.
