Re: I feel blessed
There were actually 5 hex receivers in the crate and 2 very nice round tulas that were very nicely finished. I didn't have enough cash to buy the 5th hex, so my friend, who showed up 10 minutes later, bought that one along with a few other nice rifles from the crate. He kept trying to get me to trade, but no way was I giving up my good fortune. None of these have been counterbored, and the rifling still looks nice and clean all the way to the end. I plan to buy a crate of ammo soon, as I can't wait to get out there and shoot them. The firing pins were all set perfectly from the factory, and I suspect that the headspace is spot on as well, but I will check just to be sure. I do have a question though. Is it common for the front sight to be offset to one side? Two of these are offset, but the scribe mark on the site and base are perfectly lined up as if it was set that way from the factory.
Re: I feel blessed
Yes it is common. Shoot them first to see where they are hitting, and remember they were sighted in with the bayos on.

Re: I feel blessed
The top two are probably ex-dragoons. Taka a look at the back of the sight and see if there is a gap. It is also possible that the 1930 is one as well. Anyone know what that mark is on the top right rifle is? looks like two crossed somethings?
BTW, really nice.

Three of them have the gap under the rear site. The mark does look like two crossed hammers in a circle, but it could be a poorly stamped hammer and sickle. There are small stamps all over this rifle, even in the wood. I will try to get a few upclose pics with my usb microscope sometime and post them on here.

Nice rifles! That's a heck of a start!
Re: I feel blessed
Ya gotta start somewhere. That's a good place to start. Now get a '43 wartime rifle with the beaver chewed receiver, or a Chinese 53, just for sake of comparison.

Yes they are ex dragoons, and nice ones too. All of them are nice. I noticed you seem to place hex receivers and round Tulas in a different realm. You can sure miss some nice round Izhevsk rifles like that. Good luck on your next find.

Re: I feel blessed
Round receiver, hex receiver, the differences are cosmetic, they both work well, they both are strong, the Russians changed to round to simplify production and save money. The hex receiver design was a holdover from earlier rifle designs like the Berdan II.

A hollow star located on the side of the receiver.

That star almost looks like an accidental tool mark, not quite a high security Torx, but close.
