I picked this Argentine Mauser up this morning and managed to take a few pictures. Here is what she looks like:

First, here is what the bore looks like. Its dirty, but mostly does not look that bad.

Here you can see a small mark that looks like it used to be a stamp, maybe like what is on the other barrel band.

Somebody did a really messy job with white paint on the front sight.

Here you can see the scrubbed crest.

Here are a couple pictures of the rear sight.

The stock, receiver, barrel, magazine and bolt all have matching serial numbers.

Here you can see where the hand guard is missing. There appears to be 3 slots on each side of the barrel. I assume it takes the long one.

Here are a couple pictures of the buttstock. Notice the splice on the bottom. There is a gap on the right side but it is not loose. I will leave it alone unless it gets worse or works loose.
100_2731 (Small).jpg
Here you can see two holes that appear to have been filled in. I assume they are covering whatever was used to secure the splice to the bottom of the stock.

Here you can see the gap that has formed between the stock and the splice
100_2800 (Small).jpg
There are a couple cartouche on the bottom of the stock.
100_2735 (Small).jpg
100_2740 (Small).jpg
Here on the bottom of the stock, you can see what looks like a repair job. It appears to be filled in and painted over.
100_2746 (Small).jpg
Here you can see a little pitting in the metal. There is no rust, just the pitting.

I plan to disassemble and clean thoroughly. I think the bore will clean up nicely. I am not sure on the stock finish. If you look closely in some of the pictures, you can see where a brown finish is over what appears to be an oil finish. I think someone may have tried to "fix" the stock sometime in the past. But I do not think they stripped the stock or even sanded it. You can see the couple cartouche that are clearly visible and do not appear to be sanded. I am going to check the headspace (when I get a gauge) and see if I can buy some target ammo. If nothing else, this looks like it will be a good shooter.

No, it's correct, Argentina refinished the rifle before offering it up for sale as surplus in the hope of getting a better deal for them. Nice one :)

Argentina did this to a lot of rifles back in the 60's, among them several types of Mauser, and the Remington Model 1879 rolling block. They didn't do all the rifles, just the ones they were selling off for a time there in the 60's.

Liberty Tree has the missing hand guard. They offer it in light and dark color. It's hard to tell but I think mine looks closer to the lighter color. They also have the cleaning rod and nose cap in stock. Looks like everything I need to complete this Mauser.

Thanks again JYD. I pulled the stock off so I could take a look at the metal below the woodline. I am very pleased. There are spots with minor pitting, but its all clean and blued with no rust. Here are a few more pictures so you can get an idea how clean this rifle is.

The only 7.65x53 they had in stock was this Hornady. It was pricey, but I get to take this picture. The bore was not that dirty. It has some minor pitting and the lands are worn a little, but I think it should still shoot pretty good.

Privi makes ammo for it and it is cheaper then the Hornady, it runs about 20$ it is not cheap but cheaper
I find milsurp at gun shows some time and buy all I can. It is a great little rifle and a dnmbned good hog gun. Privi soft tip stopes them dead in there tracks.
