How To Change Magazine on SKS
Not that I am chommping at the bits to change my Yugo but I saw somewhere a SKS that had been modified either by the manufacturer of owner to allow use of AK magazines. Only real reason I might concerned this is because of how many AK mags I have on hand. I don't know if it will change the 922 regs or break/bend other laws or just be in bad taste, but anywho how is it done????
Re: How To Change Magazine on SKS
Aside from being a preservation forum, and permanent modifications are beyond the scope of the forum, there is no such conversion. Standard SKS's are not compatible.
Commercial SKS's such as the SKS-M, SKS-D, MC-5D, Type-84, etc. are factory altered to accept AK mags.

Yes you do have some 922 things to consider. How ever, I am against altering a military rifle and will not discuss with you how to do it. I think perhaps
you need to read the rules of this board and the comments on the semi-auto opening thread. This refers to preservation and not alteration of a military rifle.

Just buy an AK, or pony up for a commercial SKS variant. No 922r to have to figure out that way. I think an SKS with a long dingling hanging down looks weird, anyway.

My apologies to each and all, did not in any way intend to cross a line and apparently I have. I myself do not believe that a military weapon of any type should be chopped and dropped if it destroys the original design. Again I am sorry.

Like martin said, there are some commercial variants that take AK mags. You could try to find one of those.WALKERS210 wrote:My apologies to each and all, did not in any way intend to cross a line and apparently I have. SKS was made to fire in the prone position with a ten round internal magazine, modified with a detachable AK mag will alter the way the gas cycle works, modified they are really not 100% reliable anymore, not worth the bother buy an AK.

Re: How To Change Magazine on SKS
The Chinese commies made me an SKS that uses AK mags, and it's a piece of shit. Seems that the AK mag that came with the rifle was custom fitted to the conversion, try any other mag and it falls out every shot, real fun for the feet. The little f*** who sold me the rifle held on to the special mag telling me that any AK mag would work, and since I had piles of East German mags....... The SKS ain't an AK, you want to use AK mags then get an AK, the rifle designed to use them, the SKS is best with it's 10 round mag, and nobody ever went to prison for leaving a 10 round mag in a SKS.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

There is a means of modifying (I use that word constructively!) a regular AK mag so that it can be utilized in your commercial SKS conversion. Here is a link to the thread that shows the differences between regular AK mags, and the type that are required to be used in what is called a "Mid-West" conversion (early efforts) and the Type-84 conversions.

Later versions of the SKS-D and SKS-M are not affected by this "special mag" affliction. Most any AK mag will work in them, although they do seem to prefer the Chinese manufactured mags.
