Maybe someone with a machine shop could make something like the P-38 and P-51 can openers, I'm sure there would be a market. Something that could open truly any can with a rim, Campbell soup, Spam and ammo cans and still fit on a keyring

I've lost my opener a time or two, and eyeballed the airhammer with a sheet metal cutter in it :big shock: I tied one I found to a string near the cases of ammo when I moved, the others are boxed up, somewhere :vconfused:
I said I was an addict. I didn't say I had a problem.

You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.

I used a chisel on some Bulgarian 7.62x25 Torkarev. What a wonderful experience that was. I still have lead poisoning from that one. Yep, made sure to get the can opener for the 7.62x54R. Wonderful little tool.

I'm no explosives engineer or chemist but I can guess the amount of energy released by 440 simultaneous exploding cartridges of 7,62X54R to be more than just moderately dangerous. Granted, this is a very unlikely scenario in this situation, but I saw smoke and sparks during the demonstration which indicates an obvious possible outcome should there be loose explosive material inside that metal container. Out of the millions of little containers mfg. at ancient assembly lines ,loose gunpowder might be possible.

They don't really go off all at once. I used to think that too. Even my buddies that are volunteer firefighters didn't know what happens and used to joke with me that if my place ever catches fire they'll sit back at the end of the driveway. That is until I showed them this. Sheds light on this type of thing. I feel way better after watching it.

Lead poisoning, good point, that cheap commie paint is probably loaded with lead,

Holy crap!! That's why there is a ammo shortage.

I label my storage area with the proper full sized HazMat classifcations. 1.3c, 1.4S ect and the UN numbers.

I was on a hill top in southeast Asia during a firefight in 1967 when a stack of ammo being unloaded was hit by numerous AK47 bullets. None of the stacks of mostly small arms cartridges ignited. Not even a fire started. However ,had there been larger ordinance or fuel in the area,We would have been toast. I don't know what my point is other than to say "with that kind of stuff sometimes you need some good luck"

If I don't have the can opener, I just use one of those Russian bayonets, sorta like a P38 tool. Poke it thru the lid midway down the long side, using the "sharp" edge to grip the rolled over edge of the can, just sorta pivot the blade upwards and it cuts right through that thin steel. Move the bayonet a wee bit to get another purchase, and rock the blade up through the thin steel... lather, rinse, repeat until you have it open.

The frustration always happens at the rounded off corners which take a little more patience to cut through.

The can opener is SO much easier than the Hammer and Chisel method. Maybe a Hammer and Sickle would work better though.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I have a tendency to misplace the openers, I got one with each case of ammo I shot. Recently I located one opener, it was in a place I would never have thought to look for it, can you spot it in the picture? :)
