PRVI 7.62x54r Brass Good?

Post by Capybara »

Hi all:

I just bought 500 rounds of Prvi Partizan brass boxer 7.62x54r ammo from SG Ammo. I have quite a bit of milsurp and I am new to reloading but I live in California so I wanted to build up a supply in case our moronic ammo laws go into effect.

Is this quality brass? How many times should I be able to reload it if I am doing lower powered plinking loads?

Thanks!

Very good quality, I have used it for a couple of years with no problems in my Lebel.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Good to know. I have read reports from reloaders who say they have reloaded quality brass quite a few times before it had to be sent to the recycle center. What say you? How many times do you think I can get out of this brass?

That would depend on many factors... However, if California pee's on your parade, you could always look into annealing. A friend of mine anneals after every 4th reload and I think he's on this 3rd cycle.

I guess if you get desperate... here is a good article.

You should be annealing it anyway before you use it for at least the first time, and them afain after five or six uses. You use the caliper to make sure your case stays in spec, and a case trimmer to shave it down a bit when need be, one or two shavings and that's it for me. However I load light, this keeps the brass going a bit longer.

I bought a big batch of PRVI ammo and used the brass all last year for my military match shooting. I think the brass is good quality and it held up very good. I had very few failures; some case head separations and a few cracked necks, but overall it is good stuff. The only complaint I have with PRVI in 7.62X54r is the primer pockets/flash holes being inconsistent. When you deprime and run a primer pocket cleaner in the hole, you will see the bottom of the pocket is uneven and the flash hole is sometimes punched at an angle. When I compare this to Lapua brass, it is an obvious difference. I doubt it makes that much difference in accuracy, but when shooting a match, I get very picky about brass prep, and I switched back to Lapua.

Well at the cost of Lapua brass it damn near should reload itself
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Good enough for the plinkers most of us are ( Privi), but nothing beats Lapua for quality.

I started off using Winchester, S&B, Norma and Prvi. With Winchester I got at least 12 reloads but this was without annealing any of them. The Wins required a lot of trimming after each use. Prvi is great too but I do not like the primer pockets. They are too loose and too deep for my liking. Again these required much trimming. Lapua is my favorite and is worth the money. My current Lapua batch is on shot number 19 now and still holding strong. There is minmal stretching of the brass and very little trimming involved. Neck sizing only and annealing every third shot. The flash holes are uniform right from the get go and the cases are annealed by the manufacture. The only "larger" variance in any dimensions I get using Lapua is the neck wall thickness. It usually shrinks by about 0.0025" but then stays current. A medium 2495 fps velocity charge is used with 174gr BTHP Match bulets. The rifle is a 1944 Sako M39 and a 1943 Tikka M30. I am a firm believer that the Lapua brass makes a huge difference in accuracy compared to all the other brass manufactures. I use it exclusively for competition. I am glad I stockedpiled it when I did... enough for a life time.

+1 Junk Yard Dog.

I have to say that with my Mosins, I am very happy hitting my 8" gong at 100 yards, not really looking for match quality with my M44s. The Prvi arrives next week.
