They make very little on them unless some new guy on eBay overpays. I bought fifty cleaning kits for a buck each on eBay once, enough to outfit all the rifles I had bought that didn't come with one.

That looks like a winner to me :Drool1: .

bcposton I think that everything has become a sellable commodity these days. I have seen can openers, ammo crates, and rifle accessories that used to be included for free being sold seperately different places. It's just a sign of the times

Last week I took the gun apart and took the metal bits to my brother's auto shop and used his parts washer to clean all the cosmoline off everything with mineral spirits. It got most of it off, but still had to use some carb cleaner in the barrel and chamber with a brush. Dried everything off with compressed air and oiled everything with Milcomm grease and oil. Now, the stock. It did not have a lot of the gunk on it, but after cleaning it with Zipp cleaner, it still has some in the wood. What is the best way to deal with the cosmoline with out damaging the finish on the stock? It's not hot enough yet to set in the sun, and I'm getting antsy to get this put back together and do some shooting. On a side note I received the No-Go gauge from Okie and the head spacing it fine. I got the hammer pin adjusted using the included tool, so the gun should be safe to shoot. I just received 200 rounds of Brown Bear ammo along with 40 rounds of Herters I bought when I got the gun at Cabelas.

I usually just wipe the stock with a towel. After you shoot it (take a towel with you) more will leak out.

I wouldn't do anything more than wipe the stock down with a cloth. It's basically just grease they used and it'll work it's way out as you use it. I have a cloth with me as I shoot and wipe whatever comes up as it happenes. It's been on the stock for decades and isn't going to hurt anything really. If you really must clean it further you could get some kotten kleanser or just get some lemon oil from the local grocery store. One thing to mention I wouldn't use carb cleaner to clean these. If you get it on any of the wood it will remove the finish and if you have a rifle that has black paint as some did it will remove it.

If you want to clean it and preserve it like the museums do it then here are the chemicals to use,
