POLISH WZ29 spanish civil war vet

Post by desdem12 »

Picked this up when I picked up the madsen so almost a fair trade. Spanish civil war polish wz29. Evidenced by the scrubbed crest and a circle z mark and a few other traits. Most of these were wiped out making the Spanish m43s and m44s (airforce) rifles so there are not a lot around. :D Still in ooey gooey mess but most is dried on.

That makes 2 of us Dave. I was searching for what it was and quickly found out though. It was listed as a k98 which of course it is not. About a 1/4 or half an inch longer then a m24/47. All that yellow is dried so I am doubting this has been fired for ever. The magazine is really caked. It will take a while to clean this one up. :D

Still trying to find some of the history but It is clear the poles or someone sent a bunch of wz29 rifles, and before they sent them they scrubbed the receiver. Then after most were worn out they took the receivers and made the Spanish m43 and Spanish m44 air force rifles out of the polish receivers, so the actual wzs that were sent to spain are not found very much I guess. This is a first for me. I have the bolt cleaned up and the chamber looks better and I have cleaned the barrel up some but I am done with it for the day. The stock looks in fabulous shape and the outside of the metal is excellent. Haven't rechecked the bore yet. Back at it tomorrow. :D

I just got it home but when I finished paying for the madsen I looked around and this was hiding by hunting rifles. So I have to blame you at the very least for having to pay for this one also.  Ah who am I kidding, I go to that store at least once a week. They had zipo yesterday when I picked this one up though. The search for history on it continues though. :D
P.S. GM, I would maybe trade this for a certain B barrel and a rifle to be named later.. :ugeek:

Well I have traced the polish rifles sent to spain. They were sold to a british company who sold or were bought as aid for the republican forces. This is a list of stuff sent to spain and the link has it in better form. Table is at the bottom of the article.

Nice article and list! It gives great insight into how the refurbished hoard from the Ukraine was created. After being caught so unprepared for ww1, the USSR stockpiled any military arm on hand that would fire a projectile. The list reflects the variety that they had. It didn't stop it from thehappening again in WW2, and they became even more vigilant in keeping obsolete weapons on hand for.emergency use. This is how we have all of the various refurbished mosins, nagants, mause and steyr rifles now. Also makes me think there m39s with ugly red shellac in a salt mine somewhere. :D

Side note, its amazing how adaptable and long lived the Vertelli design was. They were used by British Home Guards, Trans Siberian railroad guards and Italian colonial troops in WW2 . Also by both sides in the SCW. Some of the Swiss ones showed up In Finland at some point too but earlier.

The circle Z is for what I suspect to be a mark from ZB Brno where some of the wz29 rifles were redone. :D
