Egyptian 7.62x54R Long Range Tracer Ammo

Post by Hobe Sound Falcon »

I had posted before here, about Polygunbags.com having some Rare Ammo in several Calibers. I just bought some of their 1957 made Chinese White TIp Sniper Ammo, I am going to buy some of this Egyptian Green Tipped Long Range Tracer Ammo, If anyone has tried it please post here.

Dumb question perhaps, are you sure it's tracer? I thought green tip was armor piercing.

Snipers do not use tracer, fastest way in the world to give away your position short of standing up and screaming " here I am"

Tracers are intended to be used with automatic weapons. They are loaded onto the ammo belt every 10th round or so depending on the weapon's rate of fire. When firing the weapon, the tracer path will give the soldier a general idea of where his rounds are going. The ammo itself isn't as accurate as standard FMJ and older ammo will often curve off one direction or another if fired at distant targets (similar to a hook or slice in golf). In a semi-auto or bolt action weapon, they effective use of a tracer round would not have any benefit. If you do shoot one, you have to be careful...it would be similar to shooting a flare gun down range. You're not exactly sure where the round will go and there's going to be some pretty intense heat when and where it does hit. Modern tracer rounds are a lot more accurate than older ammo.

Though on the extreme end of the spectrum, the following video sums up effective use of tracer fire:

Intense Tracer Fire

As JYD said, no sniper would fire this ammo since it would give away his position. In addition, with any distance at all, he most likely would not even hit his target.

On a side note, but somewhat related, the original TOW missles actually left a smoke trail when fired. Not good when you're the soldier hiding behind a bush that just fired one. Fortunately, the original TOW missles did not see much action and TOW II was modified to make it smokeless.

Personally, I would not shoot a tracer round out of a bolt action rifle. There just isn't enough "wow" to offset the safety concerns. It would be cool to collect a few rounds though to show them off with your collection :)
