Gun show M44
Gun show M44
Went to local gun show yesterday and what a shock. 22lr, box of 500, $48. 650 rounds of 7.62x39, $350. Only 2 SKS, 1 Chinese and 1 Yugo, $400 ea. A 1942 91/30 Izhevsk, $120 (not bad price) and a M44 1953 Hungarian, $225. Long story, got the M44 for $195. It joins another 1953 Hungarian alreay in the rack. The stock, buttplate, and receiver match. Buttplate looks like it was used to pound in tent pegs or break up rocks. Floorplate and bolt do not although the bolt is Hungarian. The stock is in really nice shape and the bluing is well worn. The barrel was so bad that a cloth patch would not go thru without ripping apart. In fact, the whole rifle was the dirtiest I have ever seen in a milsurp. After a lot of work the bore came out really well. Shiny and tall sharp rifling. I was very surprised. Here are a couple of pictures.

I like it alot. I agree with the buckeye guy, something about those.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Nice find, good looking Model 44 you found. I'm in agreement here with Longcolt regarding gunshow finds. Show's use to be where collectors and enthusiast met and sold each other nice firearms, I've went to gunshows in the basement of churches when I was growing up, these were nice gunshows. The last several shows I have been too were all about over priced crap guns that they could not move in the stores so they hauled to a show for an uneducated public apparently willing to pay too much for, almost everything. There are still some old time dealers at shows and a deal or too out there but the shows are just not the same atmosphere they use to be.

Appropriate away, I have posted them here before.ofgg wrote:That's a nice find. It's rewarding when you can clean something like that up.![]()
BTW I like your gun rests. Might have to appropriate that idea!

It sounds like you had a ball at the show. I am proud for you. At our last show, you couldn't have paid me $100.00 to stand in the lines and fight the crowds.

I live in a really small town. There were less than 40 tables. No lines to get in.

Siam, this is a great looking Hungarian. I found one of these awhile back on Gunbroker in about the same condition as yours, but missing the bayonet. After replacing the bayonet the package is complete. I still need to shoot it. I just love everything about these. Are you planning to shoot it soon?
Re: Gun show M44
Very nice!!
Looking forward to getting one myself soon
Re: Gun show M44
Still lots of snow on the ground here and pretty cold. So I ran 5 rounds thru it into a dirt bank while standing in the garage. Will take it to my range to shoot for accuracy in a month or so.bunkysdad wrote:Siam, this is a great looking Hungarian. As you can see by the pictures, it is missing the cleaning rod. Will order a couple from Reich. Seems the M44's are missing the rod quite often.bunkysdad wrote:Siam, this is a great looking Hungarian. Mostly it's type 53's that are, all my others came with the rods, Soviet or otherwise.

I must have really bad luck as my 2 Hungarian, the Polish and the Romanian were all missing the cleaning rods.Junk Yard Dog wrote:Mostly it's type 53's that are, all my others came with the rods, Soviet or otherwise.

Yeah I must have the same luck as all the well used ones I have gotten over the years seem to be without rods too. I bought 12 for $100 awhile back and I am still working through those. Congrats a nice one! Bill
