Argentine 1891 Mauser
Argentine 1891 Mauser
Anybody familiar with the Argentine 1891 Mauser? I was looking at one today and I like it. It looks to be in good shape, but the receiver has the crest ground off. What's a decent price for one? I only took these two pictures, but maybe someone can give me an idea what to look for when I examine it again.
Its blurry, but you can make out the "Mauser Modelo Argentino 1891 Manufactura Loewe Berlin" Here you can see where the crest was ground off

Re: Argentine 1891 Mauser
Yes, I own four of them
The ground crest was done by the Argentine government, not Bubba, they did this prior to selling off the rifles in the 1950's and 60's, later imports have the crest intact. They are all made before 1898, no FFL needed to buy one, ammo is loaded by Privi, 7.65 Argentine, but is not cheap, if you want to shoot it a lot plan to reload. Good to reload your own anyway so you can load to the lowest pressure, never push these rifles, they are very old, but very well made by the Germans. Price can range from a low of $280 for one I saw slip under the radar on GB last year, to a more normal $400. If it looks refinished it probably is, but not by Bubba, the Argentine government refurbished a lot of rifles in order to command a better price when they sold them, they may be the only country ever to do this with an eye to making a profit selling them. These Mauser's are made in the grand old tradition of 19th century gunmaking, such fit and finish would cost you five grand today in a new rifle.

Re: Argentine 1891 Mauser
If it's in the range JYD said I would buy it. Mainly because they are nice rifles and I have a bayonet for one.

Re: Argentine 1891 Mauser
Good to know, thanks for the reply. I will definitely go back and take another look at it. I was not sure about the stock, but I am finding a lot of them on Google that look just like this one. If I buy it, ill post some pictures..

Re: Argentine 1891 Mauser
I have one and it is an excellant made weapon. I like the looks of them and to think these are antiques? They look like they were made not to long ago. I paid considerable less then JYD listed but most of them seem to go for about 300ish on gb. I have a first series, first year rifle and have not shot it yet. I did aquire a box of bullets for it at the usual price of 20 dollars for 20 rds.

Note in the last pic that on erifle has a long handguard, the other short, long is the later style, both are 19th century.

Re: Argentine 1891 Mauser
Very cool. I did not notice the difference in the handguard, good information to know.

Those are sweet.
They have really nice barrel bands for the handguards too. I think mine is a long one so it might have been replaced.

Re: Argentine 1891 Mauser
I've one of these as well. Probably my prettiest rifle.
Fit and finish wise they can't be beat. Very interesting and fun to shoot as well.

Re: Argentine 1891 Mauser
$219 and they are holding it for me. Its missing the cleaning rod and the hand guard. It also has a toe splice in the stocl. Its a pretty cool looking mauser.

Re: Argentine 1891 Mauser
I am 99.99% sure i have seen both long and short handguards for sale somewhere. I even think they have some of the brass or copper "barrel bands". Can't remember which they are. 219 is a good deal. You should be able to aproximate the date of build on it through the serial number. They were done in series marked by the letter in it. A 1st series-D i think was the first year and 1892 build. Not sure if it was D4999 or not but somewhere in there.

The Mauser Model 1891 Carbine for the cavalry is also a nice gun. It had a direct stack magazine and a shorter overall length. The ammo had reduced muzzle velocity. They were transferred to the police until the early 50's. The noticeable difference in the lack of a protrusion in the magazine made the cavalry magazine less of a hindrance, according to the World Encyclopedia of Rifles.JGC

Wow, $219.00 sounds like a damn good deal to me! Congratulations!!!

Looks like Liberty Tree has the handguard and the cleaning rod. Now i just need to finish paying for it so I can figure out whether I need the short or the long handguard. They have a couple other small items I have been wanting also, so i'll just order it all at once.

Re: Argentine 1891 Mauser
IIt was a good deal on the madsen i thought. If you already have 30-06 ammo it would have been a no brainer. Regardless i am very happy with the m91. I can't get any finns here so worked out for me.

Re: Argentine 1891 Mauser
That is a really good deal. If those handguards from Liberty Tree don't come with the copper securing wires I am sure you can find a suitable substitutes at a hardware store. That way you can get that rifle in tip top shape. There appears to be a couple different types of cleaning rod as well. Brass headed rods mean it was and early rod and a steal rod means it was a later rod. I think the same thing is said about the handguards as well, the short ones were on early rifles but then at some point they changed to the long ones.
When It comes to these I personally prefer the look of the short handgaurd, nothing wrong with the long ones I just like the shorter guards.
