Mosin Saftey Add On

Post by rideandslidejim »

Just saw this on E Bay. For those of us who plan on hunting with our Mosin's, i think it's a great idea. Think i'l try one for next hunting season.

Pretty cool. I have never seen one of these before :vcool:. Have they been thoroughly tested? Sounds like a great idea

The original Mosin Nagant safety is somewhat of a pain to use, but it is infinitely safer than this contraption. :2cents:

I bought a 42 Tula refurb for my cousin's boy's 12th birthday so he could hunt with it. The stock safety was too strong for him so he used one of these. It works well but the flip lever is small. It didnt mar the finish on his at all. But that being said, the original safety would be my preference just because thats the way it was designed, some of these trigger safeties may not be as safely designed.

Ordered one and will see ! I'm sure the stock saftey is better, but how many use it !!!!! If i like it i plan on ordering a extra trigger/mag. housing from Liberty, installing it , and just swap them out when going out on the field.

I know these are more but if I was going to use the safety I would do the brass stacker style.

The mosin safety has worked for 100+ years and yes I would bet 90% of them have never had the safety turned on after they left the factory.

How much weight would that add to the cocking knob? Plus I personally wouldnt like having that in front of my face under recoil. Works like the ring on a Swiss rifle though.

I know some people don't have the option, but if it were me, I would pick another rifle from the arsenal for a hunt. Not sure I would want to deal with any of these "safety" devices in the field. I'll take my Ruger M77 MK1 with a positive, shotgun style safety and a high quality scope if I want to hunt.

Do not put that shit on your cocking knob, it's held in place by two allen screws that screw down onto the metal leaving a nice mark behind, and when they spit they scratch the shit out of the metal as well. You can also forget about using one if you have arthritis in your finger joints. The other one looks harmless enough, but what the hell is that little cutout in the stock? Empty chamber is the safest way to carry a rifle in the field, Mosin or otherwise.

If hunting involves gloves (cooler weather) this device is a non-starter. The cocking "pull-tab" looks Rube Goldberg.

I always wear shooting gloves, they are not thick but still it would be a tight fit.

I agree can't get much safer then bolt open. That's the way to transport them

I hunt with my Mosin and though not the strongest guy I use the safety - gloves do make it easier. Surprisingly it is quieter than the safety on my m96 Mauser. I personally wouldn't spend the money on any of the add-on safeties.

Personally, I will stick with the stock safety. Gun safety starts with you. Never leave rounds in the gun, only load when shooting and unload what you don't shoot, carry bolt open out in the field . As to a young shooter, if they cannot operate the stock safety they should probably be using something else. :2cents: :2cents: :2cents:

I use the stock safety hunting, and have had no problems. I'll pass on these two.

As was recently pointed out in another thread when the question of a safety came up, no matter if you use the bolt safety or some other gizmo, you are still at the mercy of a sear, and cocking piece that are possibly over 100 years old to hold that firing pin back. Smack the rifle and a little metal fatigue kicks in and something lets go, BOOM. Locked and loaded is for war, not for tramping around in the woods looking for meat. You miss a shot so what, better that than you trip over a log, drop the rifle and blow a hole in your hunting partners head. That sort of thing is hard to explain. With these rifles mostly being Soviet refurbs and all pretty with the refurb we sometimes forget how old they are, and how much use they have seen

Good point Jim !!!! Guess the gadget guru inside of me got the better of me. Another one for the gizmo box. Will still give it a try though.

If the translation of the Russian video narrated by Makarov is correct the "safety" is not a safety as we understand it. It is a bolt lock intended to keep a cocked bolt from being lost when carrying the rifle in brush.
