Bunky: I actually bought a laminate stock to use on my Izhevsk for when I go to the range. That way I won't goof up the wood stock that is on there. I actually bought the .22 trainer for my wife. I can't see her firing the full power 7.62R and enjoying it. :) I had an old Harrington and Richardson .22 single shot rifle a loooooong time ago and a brick of ammo can last almost forever. And yes, I've had a 10/22 and the biggest pain was reloading the dang thing because it was so much fun to spray it at the wood chunks floating in the target pond at the range and making them bounce. LOL...right with you about restraining from going into a political rant. I kinda wish the forum had a small place tucked away where we could vent that kind of stuff. But I guess it would be impossible to monitor.

Iron: I recently received another M39 SKY from Dennis Kroh at Empire Arms and a "B" Model M39 from Burns that arrived on the same day. It was interesting to compare the wrapping of both. Both came in what appeared to be identical boxes. The Empire Arms gun was wrapped in bubble wrap and the bolt was OUT of the gun and also wrapped in bubble wrap and securely taped to the gun where it wouldn't be subject to UPS idiocies or damage the stock. Newspaper was used inside the box the full length of the gun to protect it from damage. Took me 15 minutes to get everything unpacked. The Burms gun arrived undamaged. It was also wrapped a lot differently from previous orders I had placed. It had the same newspaper crunched up to prevent the gun from bouncing around inside the box. But the stock had cardbopard wrapped around it in 3 different locations in the center area to protect it. It was a VERY tight fit in the box and I really had to pull on it to get it out. The bolt was in the rifle and cardboard was wrapped around it. The cardboard around the bolt was the only thing that was the same from previous purchases. I dunno, of the two I think I prefer the way Empire wraps things. The bubble wrap gives a "full length" protection of the gun. The cardboard Burns uses protected the middle of the gun but left the buttstock and forend exposed. I also like that the bolt was removed on the Empire gun. I know bubble wrap costs more to use, but I would be willing to pay the extra $5 just to have it's protection. But that's just me. :)

Jolly: I don't think water-to-ice would cause that kind of damage. There was no apparent wet damage on the box or on any of the packing inside. It would have taken a LOT of water to force open the "fingers" on the stock the way it did. That amount of water would have been readily apparent on the package. Plus the water would have had to have been in a VERY specific area. Just water on the wood might have caused swelling, but ALL the wood in that area would have swelled. I just don't think that was possible.

The best protection is to wrap newspaper thickly around the entire rifle and tape is in place, bed the end of the box with more paper and set the rifle in it, then tightly as possible pack newspaper around the rifle in the box so it's can't move. The box should be double walled and packing tape , the heavy stuff with string in it should be wrapped around both ends entirely, and around the box in at least five places along it's length.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Some years back I sold a US M1903 stock on eBay that the seller had paid me an insane amount of money for. I did all of the above, except I added a steel pipe the size of the action , taping it into the stock channel, and I stuck the entire box into another larger double wall box for added protection. It cost me over $40 to ship it, but the customer gladly paid when I explained the precautions I took.

That is the way the damaged M39 was wrapped, minus the newspaper wrapped around the rifle.. :vsad:

Having worked for UPS Loading the Semi trucks I can 100% say I would NEVER EVER ship anything of value with them. They teach you to build walls in the truck like a game of Tetris. The problem is you can't pix boxes you just take whatever comes down the slide and place it where you think it would work. I remember on Valenties day taking the Triangle boxes filled with floweres, putting them 3-4 in a row so they made a "base" then stacking a 70lbs box on top. and then other random boxes on that. sure the triangles held up fine with the truck just sitting but I always wondered what happend over bumps...or once some humidity and heat set in.

Sounds like your stock was what we called a Bridge fill. you get about half way and have a gap in your wall that no box at all will fit into... so you fined a long box , bridge the gap and start the next row on top. I'll bet right after your box they stuffed a Dell computer box right on top. Never fails.

A friend of mine works for the company, he long ago told me all about the UPS "stamp of approval" when I asked why there were always footprints on my boxes.

They are still being made.....in China, but I see at least ten originals at every summer flea market around here, a common item, glass can be had for them.

I would never ship anything without bubble wrap and endcaps at the very least of newspaper. I also stuff the entire box with newspaper and always reover the bolt and tape it in bubble wrap to the barrel metal. Best packing job I have evr seen was on my Russian Winchester, the guy amd a custom wooden box out 2x4's and half inch plywood and after wrapping the rifle in bubble wrap he made custom blocks of wood to hold the rifle in place. It would have held a tank at bay! I told him I was impressed and he related that he shipped things for a living and routinely made custom packages. It was a killer package! Bill

Okay, I finally got my replacement stock from Burns. It IS a WW2 Stock. It is NOT a SKY stock like what came on it. It has the "L" cartouche on the side. The stock is in outstanding condition. All the metal went on it just fine and the handguard closely matches the coloring of the stock. This is what the cartouche looks like:

Image

Am I happy with what I got? I guess. Sure would have preferred a SKY stock. But I do know that SKY rifles had different cartouches besides the SKY one, either from having the stock replaced, or maybe they just used whatever was available. I have another SKY rifle I bought from Dennis Kroh at Empire Arms and it has the SKY stock, so I am not completely bummed. And at least I have a rifle I can take to the range now. Oh well...so ends my tail. :|
