Help determining this 91/30

Post by Jhawk23 »

I picked up a Mosin Nagant M91/30 at a gun show today. It was listed as a Cossack/Dragoon rifle but I was able to figure it wasn't because they stopped making them in 1932. The barrel markings are very faded but I was able to read it as a 1936 made in the Izhevsk factory and its 48 1/2" long; which i deduce makes it a M91/30. What has me perplexed is the front sights on it. It doesn't have any of the front sight posts listed for 91/30s on this site: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinM9130S.htm. But rather seems to have a dragoon/cossak front sight:http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/1006.jpg. I'm wondering if anyone here has a similar rifle or would know why that it?

The best way to get good answers here is to post pics of the actual rifle. The more, the better.

That is a classic looking Spanish civil war mosin. I suspect it is a 36 Izhevsk. The front sight could have been repaced in spain or even made by them. Congrats on a nice rifle with a ton of history. how about some more pics? :vcool: :vcool: :vcool:

It is missing the front band and cleaning rod but I figured those wouldn't be hard to replace. The bolts serial number does not match the stock and butt plate unfortunately. What drew me to it was the interesting front sight and the nice brass pieces in front and behind the top wood handguard. I couldn't quite make out the markings on the stock. I was looking for something that probably would have been used in some sort of conflict so the 1936 year sounded good to me but if it is in fact Spanish Civil War that would be cool too.

I am about 99% sure this is a spanish civil war mosin. Has the look and a couple of the traits i can see already. Does it have a import mark anywhere?
The center circle in a circle is an Izhevsk arsenal cartouche. Can't tell the others. The non matching numbers also is a trait of the scw mosins so not a bad thing in this case. In any rate you have an as issued 91/30 and those are the "good" stuff if you ask me. The bands you can get at liberty tree if you need it and the cleaning rod they probly have too. :D

Cool, thanks for the speedy help. You guys are awesome. The guy I purchased it from is actually mailing me a front band; I'll check out the Liberty Tree for a new cleaning rod. I paid 170 for it, does this sound reasonable? I know at one point Cabella's was giving away 91/30s for next to nothing but given the odd sight I felt spending a little more was justified. And with the exception to the 2 circular markings on the stock the only other markings are these on either side of the barrel which i take to be manufacturer proofs:

That is a good deal these days. SCW mosins are up over $200. This is way better then a run of the mill cabellas special (although i like those too). :D

This would make a great example in anyones collection in my opinion. Loads of history, of which is different than what most Mosin Nagants have. I believe this was a good deal also. :bravo:

Yea, very likely SCW aid rifle, and is positively Izhevsk, that rifle has a great look to it, super find :)

Sure looks like a Spanish Civil War rifle to me. For some reason the Spaniards replaced some of the post and globe front sights with the lower M91 blade. Expect your rifle to hit very high on the target. I'm not sure why they did that. Very nice looking rifle, you did very well.

These guys are being nice....I'll tell you the unvarnished truth....Your rifle is a modified "Airsoft" clone made by elves. It's virtually worthless and should not be loaded much less shot. Send it to me for proper disposal.............Now if you buy that, I'll sell you a bridge. :chuckles: :chuckles: :chuckles:

Seriously nice find

Imho, I wouldn't replace any parts unless you intend to shoot it, in which case I would only replace the front barrel band. I wouldn't even replace the rod since commerciel rods are really what you want to clean the thing anyway. As far as possible I would leave it as is.

What kind of shape is the bore in?

Oh, I'll add to the chorus. Nice rifle!

Hahaha, thanks for the heads up. Guess I'll give it to my 12 year old cousin to play with. I'll give him the ammo for it too since the bullets def won't fit in an airsoft gun, lol. I took the butt plate off and there is either an 'H' or and upper case 'I' engraved underneath it on the wood as well. Bore is real nice, rifling appears to be in great shape. There's a little bit of gunk in there but I haven't tried cleaning anything on it yet
