Re: Where did all the 91/30's go??
People bought that commie surplus ammo because it was cheap and let them have some fun shooting, if they have to pay as if it was commercial new ammo many will not bother and rifles will become display items once the supply of ammo they have on hand for them dries up. I knoe I would not pay that kind of money for 40 year and older commie corrosive primed ammo, screw that, I might as well reload my own and have the good stuff.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Thats it. The big reason driving the demand for M91/30's in my area is inexpensive ammo. Thats all I hear about. "I want one because its so cheap to shoot!"

Re: Where did all the 91/30's go??
Lets face it, compared to new production Remington,Winchester, or Federal the ancient commie crap does not hold up well. Performance is spotty, and varys from one type to another, some tend to split cases, some can't be used on ranges that don't allow steel bullets, they coat the bore with corrosive crap that can eat the steel if not cleaned RFN, and some have coatings that sticky up the rifles chamber. Why would anyone want to pay new ammo prices for that shit? A few rounds for an ammo display would be about it.

I haven't seen any spikes in surplus ammo, still about the same as always. Saw 3 91/30's at Bill's Gunshop yesterday laying on display inside a crate. A 42 & 2 43 Izhevsk ratty refurbs ($129 each) but I did inquire on the crate! Not for sale, but if it were price would have been $50.

.25 a round is my top limit for commie surplus beyond samples for the collection, if I am going to pay more than that I will buy non corrosive new production, or reload.

If you have a FFL01 or FFL03, sign on for the dealer section at Graf's. The 20 packs have been 3.99 for a while. The 14 packs of 7.62 revolver ammo is 3.99 too. The Nagant ammo was 3.49 when I bought it. Then to 3.79. Now 3.99. The 54R has stayed at 3.99. Orders over $100, no handling fee. Shipping is reasonable.

Graf's are good folks to deal with, they sell me reloading stuff all the time, and my black powder.

Re: Where did all the 91/30's go??
Picked up a can of Bulgarian light ball, '72, at a gun show up north here yesterday. At previous shows, priced at $85. Yesterday, $100, no negotiation. That's more than what I wanted to pay, but then again better than a sharp stick in the eye. There were 2 ATI import laminate refurb 91/30's for $159 each. Nice stocks, but all numbers were electro penciled. Two R Guns import laminate 91/30's with stamped numbers, $199 each. Two '43 basic refurbs, $139 each. Polish .22- $325.
Most ammo was high. The 20 packs that were selling previously at shows for $5 were between $8-$10 per pack.

You realize that serial numbers stamped or ep'd don't hurt or help the rifle in any way? Both are acceptable, every collection should have examples of both styles. Never turn away an otherwise nice rifle just because of serial numbers.

Go for it, however know going in that the unsearched crate business is bullshit, they have been opened and each rifle removed so it could be import marked as required by US law.

What you see is classics way of saying we are too busy filling ammo orders to bother boxing your one 91/30 so just pay us a couple of grand plus another few C notes for shipping and take the whiole dam case . Saves them money packing and shipping them one by one. When it gets to your home you better have a forklife because that crate in over 70 pounds empty, add 20 rifles and all the bayonets, packing, slings, cleaning kits and oil bottles and you are in for a treat unloading it.

A tad under 300 pounds. I could lift it... A waste of money & a bonehead move to buy a freakin' crate.
When these are imported every rifle is uncrated, recorded, stamped with an import stamp & then re-crated. They are also separated at that time as well. Ever wonder how it is that Hex & round receivers are mysteriously segregated? There is no way that Ivan the Arsenal worker bothered to separate Tula from Ishevsk, Hex from Round & so on back when these were sealed into a Salt Mine. No, they are separated at the importer, crates again reopened once Classic (Or any other seller) gets them, are re-checked & re-verified once more & most likely skimmed again. What you get in the end is a bunch of nice war-time Izhevsk round receivers with the occasional Tula mixed in.
No, Crate buys were probably a great thing back when a 91/30 was just a $50 rifle & nobody was concerned with a premium but today crates are for LGS's to buy & sell as retail. Not for a collector looking for a potential Gem. You just might get lucky, but not worth dropping over Two Grand to maybe get one.

Now if you are forming your own militia and need 20 identical rifles this might fit the bill for getting the job done all at once. Then if you get a 21st member you need to buy another entire crate.
