But no rifle sights on the gun, however inserts in smaller shotgun sizes would be very useful, 16, 20, 410.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

There are alot of videos on youtube shooting with the inserts. They are surprisingly accurate for having only the bead sight. You won't be taking any long shots or tight groups but if hunting you can hit what your aiming at.

I have never used a true insert, just chamber inserts to convert my big 10 gauges to 12 gauge ( because I am too cheap to buy 10 gauge ammo)

In a normal situation the inserts for other shotgun gauges would be handy. In a survival type of situation some other calibers might be handy. Especially 22lr.

The rifles built on that frame are first rate accuracy wise. H&R made outstanding Garands back in the day, and the single shot shotguns are legendary. For what they are, they carry great in the field, don't weigh much and point like a dream! Plus it's hard to beat the price!

H&R Garands are made to the exact spec as all the other Garands, I have one from each of the four makers, all are excellently made, none of that wartime expedient shit like you see on German, Japanese or Russian weapons. Nobody was bombing our arsenals :)

i need to get me another H&R i gave my last one named "shorty " to a lady friend who was having ex-husband troubles , he was threating to burn her house down with her and the baby in it , after she introduced him to "shorty" he hasn't been seen within 50 miles of the place ..LOL

"shorty" has a ati tactical stock , the barrel cut to 18 inches and i installed a firesight front bead , with hornady oo buck it will cover a man sized target out to 25 yards, the amazing thing is it shoots slugs like a rifle :devil2:
i am so poor i can only afford mustard and biscuits three times a week ..

NEF Pardner 12 ga single, I love mine. I like it for several reasons, not the least of which is I can hold my full size Maglight in my off hand after dark, scanning the pasture and woodline for beady little preadator eyes, and if necessary hold the Maglight and forearm at the same time to illuminate and get on target. Can't operate a pump that way, but I can still reload the Pardner. I too keep a 5 round butt cuff on mine.
We have a small farm with chickens, horses and a vegetable patch.
Rabbits after the veggies - well, I don't kill them, that's just potential meat in storage.
But let some 4 legged creature from the woods out back come looking for the all-you-can-eat chicken buffet and it's showtime! The adrenaline dump keeps you from feeling the effects of a Winchester 3" number 4 buck on your shoulder until later. :beek:
I've also got one in .410 that goes with me while doing daytime chores. I put a sling on it so I could carry it and tools at the same time.
Since the big Marlin/Remington reorganization the NEF brand no longer exists, but the guns are still made under the H&R name, alongside the Toppers.
The old advertisements years ago called the single shot shotgun "The farmers friend". It's the truth.

I have a H&R single shot 12 gauge with a short (24" ?) barrel. I bought it years ago just to have something out in the barn I can get to quickly.

Likes: It has no wobbles and shakes in the fore grip like my 870s do. It's simple and easy to maintain. Can shoot any size 12 gauge shell. Inexpensive.
Dislikes: Fit and finish are so-so. Has a fairly heavy recoil. Better hit with the first shot. Fixed choke.

Overall I'm happy with it.
