Private purchase 91/30 and M44

Post by Thib »

I got a whiff that a local guy was looking to unload a 91/30 and M44 together so I figured I'd put my C&R to work... I grabbed both for $280

The 91/30 is either a 42 or 43 (very faint... will look closer in daylight)

The M44 is 1945r/47

JYD was interested in the dual date and now so am I, so I snapped a couple of quick pics with my phone. I will update them with the good camera tomorrow.

The pair:

The M44 date: (best I could do with the phone)

I think thats the "MO" you were asking about JYD (looks like an "N" but it's an "M")
Not sure what it means... hopefully I "done good"! :D

That is indeed the MO. That is worth about a 40-50 dollar premium on the rifle. Congrats!

I bet that M44 would exceed your 280 bucks all by itself on Gunbroker. That was a spectacular buy you found.

Very few MO marked M44's around, that outfit, whoever they were, seemed to prefer long rifles. Nice find :)

That is just one possible theory, unconfirmed, and without documentation just like all the rest. It was the era of Stalin, it probably was some dark, and sinister organization of some sort.

Edit: Beat me to it JYD :)

We all have our pet idea what it means, the Russians remain silent, that alone tells me it is probably something negative.

First double dated MO M44 I have seen. Very nice. Worth more than you paid for both. You should go buy a lottery ticket while your luck is running high.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
