Question about trigger assembly issue (i think)

Post by Hellbilly5000 »

I have a nagant that's pretty much straight out of the box military issue, i have fired it a few times and had issues with the ammo not extracting (issue with the ammo itself)
For what ever reason when I cycle the bolt, the bolt will come out of the receiver and when slid back forward the firing pin will not lock back.
If i hold the trigger forward and slide the bolt in place the firing pin will lock back and all is fine until the trigger is pulled then its back to not locking back unless i hold the trigger forward.
Anyone have a break down of how to get into the trigger mech so i can get what ever is wrong fixed?

Any help would be appreciated as i am going shooting on sunday with my dad and nephew and would love to be able to shoot the nagant and my 1917.

maybe the bolt is coming out of the receiver because the sear spring is loose?

I take it that you have stripped your Mosin-Nagant down and thoroughly cleaned it of all the cosmoline ? I had to do my first one twice because I neglected the trigger spring/ bolt stop, and the the area around the ejector spring and feed interrupter area. Mine then worked flawlessly, even in the snow ! BTW Welcome :)

Welcome to the forum, have you read all the information on the forum information page the link is on the board index page, sounds like you might have a sear ( bolt stop) or trigger issue, you will have to remove the action from the stock to get into this, it has to be done anyway for proper cleaning.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

There is only one screw that holds the trigger spring/sear in. Although it can be a bitch to loosen. Replacements are available at Liberty Tree, i think $16.

His problem could be that the screw is loose, I have seen that before, they were known for being sloppy on the small details during the refurb, and a good reason to strip the weapon down before even thinking of firing it, cleaning the grease being the other.

As far as cleaning goes when I got it it had already been cleaned and I had to remove nittle to no cosmoline. I got ammo I fired it bolt jammed. Got it unjammed fired bolt jammed. Repeated several times before I put the rifle up. Moved to corpus told what was happening to the bolt. Was given several hundred rounds for free and that solved the issue. Then fast forward till late October. In the process of moving out and i have someone looking at the house. I open the bottom of the internal magazine remove the rounds and then cycle the bolt to remove the one in the chamber. When i go to reload the weapon is when the bolt decided not to work. The trigger hangs loose and has no tension on it what so ever.

All in all I have fired maybe 10 rounds through this thing if that many.

As JYD suggested maybe have a look through here. http://www.russian-mosin-nagant-forum.c ... index.html You may have more than one problem but reguardless of the rifle looking clean when you got it, I'd go over the whole thing myself just to be sure. The chamber might have some dried gunk in it still and might be part of the problem with the bolt being hard to reopen on a fired round but make sure the rifle is in safe usable mechanical condition first. No loose screws and properly cleaned. Then go from there.

I know the original issue with the sticky bolt was the ammo. It was surplus russian ammo that had been reloaded to many times and the base of the casting when fired bulged back causing the bolt to bind on the round itself.

Who reloaded the surplus ammo you have?

Some factory in Russia I think. The ammo is probably 40 to 50 years old.
Even unfired the ammo would bind with the bolt when trying to extract it.

Why do you believe this ammo has been reloaded? The commies were not known for reloading ammunition, their soldiers were not trained for that, or issued equipment for it. The cartridges with their steel cases and Berdan primers were not intended for reuse. During the Indian Wars of the mid 19th century US troops out on the plains were expected to reload their own rounds, they were issued tools to do it, but these were black powder rounds, not possible to overcharge them so the soldiers could be trusted to load them, not so with smokeless.

Russian surplus is not reloaded ammo. It's new made from all new parts. Some of the recently imported older (1940s) stuff is hard on extracting after being fired but that's also new. New meaning it's not reused components. The Russians did not reload old cases. What are the numbers on the bottom of the cartridges?

Have you even pulled out the action out of the stock. It sound like you have a couple problems. Some broken or loose parts, trigger pin, loose or missing screw on the sear spring, broken sear....you need to break it down to really see. The ammo is not reloads they are military surplus, we have shot 100,000,000's of rounds of it, nothing wrong with 99% of it. What you are experiencing with the bolt is, "sticky bolt syndrome". Put in, "sticky bolt", in the search box at the top of the page and you can solve that problem.

The sticky bolt issue was due to the ammo. I have used both wolf brand and monarch in it before the other issues with no binding or sticky bolt.
