Two rounds fired at once
Re: Two rounds fired at once
I'm a frequent handloader, but I don't reload the 7.62x39 round. It sure looks like to me from firing the Tula ammo in the SKS that I am getting some typical signs of pressure, specifically cratered and popped primers. The Wolf ammo and certain other kinds of Russian ammo do not seem to be producing as much pressure, and fired cases appear normal with no cratered primers. The longer barrel length and very tight gas system of the SKS may very well have something to do with the Tula rounds developing higher than normal pressure. I figure the SKS design must have been suited to the first generation Soviet M43 round which had slightly lower published velocities than some of the modern ammo. I would like to see some pressure data (PSI or CUP) on both the Tula and the Wolf round to see if my theory is correct. Anybody got any ideas where that data might be? Also, has the industry standard pressure level for the 7.62x39 round changed any over the years? Right now, I don't know where to find these answers.

Re: Two rounds fired at once
I have shot some domestic made stuff(expensive
), I can say the domestic ammo feels slightly weaker to me than the imported ammo. As for pressures the Russians load to, knowing the way they turn it out, probably loaded just enough to be in the ball park of the published specs, and to meet their specs. Maybe it was a cost cutting measure, get lower grade primers or simply change primer metal to a harder more brittle metal alloy, and use lower grade casings to save like a half a cent or penny per round. A few hundred millions rounds later, that's a bunch of penny's
.

Here's some interesting reading. Follow some of the links in the thread. I don't see pressure stats but there's some other interesting data including chrono data. Now keep in mind that Wolf is not an ammo manufacturer and the stats are subject to change because they change who they contract with to make it. It's still interesting info. http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=268tjtM38 wrote:I'm a frequent handloader, but I don't reload the 7.62x39 round. Some years ago, may have been in Shotgun News, a lawyer was asking that any one that had an SKS do multiple firing, like the post had, to contact him. That is all I recall on the subject.

I took my SKS down for cleanings and besides some crude from using it i didnt find anything else. Firing pin was clean for the most part. So im just chalking it up to a once in a lifetime thing, but im gunna keep an eye on it if it does it again.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: Two rounds fired at once
On my first SKS (long gone now), it would slam-fire once out of a hundered rounds or so. Usually, it would shoot two to three rounds off, so I would only load 5 rounds in at a time. I didn't want to take the chance of 'full auto' with 20 rounds in the magazine. My second (current) SKS exhibits none of those symptoms. Both had 'loose' firing pins and were cleaned after every range visit. No over-oiling.
If I took my Wolf ammo and racked the slide back to chamber a round, then ejected the unfired round, there was a remarkable 'dent' in the primer on the unfired round. It was unsettling. This was on my first SKS - my current one does not do this. I can only think that the firing pin on my first one may have been bent or otherwise 'messed up'. A friend purchased it from me and had also experienced the issue infrequently.

That's not good, you used to hear a lot about this sort of thing with the Chinese new made imports years ago, it was attributed to sloppy rush work done when they were flooding the US market with them. I never had any of my Chinese SKS rifles do that, but they are all surplus military models, no new ones unless you count the Vietnam capture that was technicaly never issued.

Re: Two rounds fired at once
I had a early Norinco that went fully auto a few times before I got rid of it back in the early 90's didn't know why at the time. Then I found out later that on them there was a design change with the bolts, from my understanding they had to add a spring around the firing pin on them to keep it from flying forward when the bolt closed on the first firing. causing them in a way to go auto at times all it took was firing the first round. They added the spring to help keep the firing pin held back on bolt closure preventing this.
As a follow up this may have been on the early Russian's you know how the mind can go at times.

Commercial ammo has soft primers especialy the white box 7.62x39 military SKS ammo has hard primers , you can get a spring loaded fireing pin for your SKS .

happened to my Norinco also. Slam fire. A spring with the firing pin is the cure.

If you do not punch the firing pin retainer out and clean the pin and channel once in awhile, you can have problems. Look for any sign of corrosion on the tapered tip of the firing pin. Any, can cause the pin to stick forward on occasion. Use pipe cleaners to clean bolt channel. And, never ever put any oil on the pin or in the channel. It will trap fouled powder like a magnet.
Spring loaded pins. Ask the manufacturer if it will allow you not to have to take the pin out and clean it. He won't!
